Student Position #1

Position Title: Project Coordinator (GAA or advanced UAA)

Faculty: Land & Food Systems/Forestry

Proposed Start Date: May 1, 2023

Term of Employment: This position is for 15 hours/week for 16 weeks (May 1 – August 31) and 5 – 10 hours/week for 26 weeks during the 2023/2024 academic year (September 2023 – April 2024). Start and end date and number of hours per week are flexible to accommodate student schedules and exams. There is an option to renew the position for a second year (with reduced hours), depending on funding.

Rate of Pay: $33.80/hour + statutory pay (GAA) or $20.33/hour + statutory pay (UAA)

Project Description:

The Faculties of  Land and Food Systems (LFS) and Forestry recognize the fundamental importance of supporting our students’ growth and development as writers, researchers, and contributors to disciplinary conversations. Through this project, we will strengthen first-year students’ foundation in scholarly writing and scaffold further development of writing skills throughout undergraduate curricula in our Faculties by  i) redesigning LFS/FRST 150 (our multi-section first-year scholarly writing courses) into outstanding hybrid learning experiences and ii) creating context-specific online learning modules for second-, third-, and fourth-year courses, to provide ongoing scaffolded instruction in scholarly writing and argumentation.

Job Description:

The part-time Project Coordinator will work closely with the Project Lead, Lindsay Cuff, to liaise between the Project Team, Student Advisory Committee, Student Creative Team and LFS Learning Centre to facilitate ongoing input on course development and media creation from current first-year and upper-level students and faculty, including the coordination of pilot testing of media resources and learning materials. In the first year of the project, the Project Coordinator will work 16 weeks in the summer of 2023 at 10 hours/week and 26 weeks during the 2023/2024 academic year at 10 hours/week.  In the second year of the project, the Project Coordinator will work 6h/week for 26 weeks (renewal funding dependent). 

Job Duties:

  • Project management: track goals, tasks, responsibilities and progress 
  • Coordinate project team, advisory committees, faculty members and students through email and other channels like MS Teams or Slack.
  • Organize scheduling and logistics around pilot testing, consultations and feedback
  • Participate in weekly team meetings
  • Contribute to revision of LFS 150 and FRST 150

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team 
  • Effective at problem solving and troubleshooting to efficiently advance a project
  • Ability to communicate at a high level with all team members on the progress and anticipated completion of components of the project
  • Ability to take initiative and sustain consistent progress

  • Mastery of the English language—fluency in professional, academic and popular uses of English
  • Superior organizational skills

Supervision:

The Project Coordinator will be directly supervised by Lindsay Cuff, Assistant Professor of Teaching in LFS/Forestry.

Position Title: Undergraduate Creative Team ( 3 UAA positions)

Job Description:

The Student Creative Team (a team of three highly motivated students with complementary skills), under the direction of Lindsay Cuff (Project Lead) and the supervision of Duncan McHugh (Digital & Instructional Media Producer, LFS Learning Centre), will create a suite of cohesive multimedia resources to support an impactful hybrid flipped classroom approach to learning.

These will include: 

  1. Approximately 10 (3-5 minute) animated videos highlighting key concepts in scholarly writing and argumentation (genre, summary, knowledge gaps, etc.) tailored for each discipline (LFS and Forestry) 
  2. Approximately 10 (3-5 minute) podcasts that focus on the more mechanical aspects of writing such as APA citation, scholarly voice, conciseness, etc. (informal and approachable conversations between students and/or instructors)
  3. 4-6 student-created place-based videos that introduce Land and Food Systems and Forestry researchers in the field with follow-up prompts that encourage curiosity and critical thinking and connect students to the research community in their disciplines 

Job Duties:

  • Participate in regular team meetings
  • Develop creative briefs, accessibility plan and timeline
  • Collaboratively (with the Project Lead) generate ideas and concepts for the suite of multimedia resources
  • Carry out pre-production, production and post-production of each of the multimedia assets described in the job description
  • Revise, edit and make changes according to feedback received by the project team and through pilot testing of the resources

Supervision:

The Student Creative Team will be supervised by Duncan McHugh, Digital & Instructional Media Producer, LFS and Lindsay Cuff, Assistant Professor of Teaching in LFS/Forestry.

Training and Mentorship Provided:

The Student Creative Team will receive training from Duncan McHugh at the LFS Learning Centre in the following:

  • Podcast Creation including pre-production (scripting, storyboarding, planning, etc.) production (sound recording, interviewing, etc.) and post-production (editing, mixing, etc.)
  • Animated Video Creation including pre-production (scripting, storyboarding, planning, etc.), production (software training, camera operation, sound recording, etc.) and post-production (editing, sound mixing, etc.)
  • “In the Field” Live Action Video Creation including pre-production (scripting, planning, site selection, etc.), production (lighting, shot selection, camera operation, etc.) and post-production (editing, colour, sound mixing, etc.)
  • Accessibility (Universal Design for Learning) training
