Through this project, we will strengthen first-year students’ foundation in scholarly writing and scaffold further development of writing skills throughout undergraduate curricula in our Faculties by  i) redesigning LFS/FRST 150 (our multi-section first-year scholarly writing courses) into outstanding hybrid learning experiences and ii) creating context-specific online learning modules for second-, third-, and fourth-year courses, to provide ongoing scaffolded instruction in scholarly writing and argumentation.

Job Description:

The Student Creative Team (a team of three highly motivated students with complementary skills), under the direction of Lindsay Cuff (Project Lead) and the supervision of Duncan McHugh (Digital & Instructional Media Producer, LFS Learning Centre), will create a suite of cohesive multimedia resources to support an impactful hybrid flipped classroom approach to learning.

These will include:

  1. Approximately 10 (3-5 minute) videos highlighting key concepts in writing and research (genre, positionality, summary, reading a scholarly article, APA citation, etc.) tailored for each discipline (LFS and Forestry)
  2. Approximately 10 (3-5 minute) podcasts that focus on different aspects of writing such as decolonizing citations, scholarly voice, demystifying the library, writing anxiety, etc. (informal and approachable conversations between students and/or instructors)
  3. 6-8 student-created videos that introduce Land and Food Systems and Forestry researchers in the field with follow-up prompts that encourage curiosity and critical thinking and connect students to the research community in their disciplines

Job Duties:

  • Participate in weekly team meetings
  • Develop creative briefs, accessibility plan and timeline
  • Collaboratively (with the Project Lead) generate ideas and concepts for the suite of multimedia resources
  • Carry out pre-production, production and post-production of each of the multimedia assets described in the job description
  • Revise, edit and make changes according to feedback received by the project team and through pilot testing of the resources

Desired Qualifications:

  • Have taken either LFS 150 or FRST 150 within the last four years
  • Able to work both independently and collaboratively within a team
  • Effective at problem solving and troubleshooting to efficiently advance a project

  • Some experience working with multimedia creation such as podcasts and DIY video creation
  • Strong sense of initiative and ability to self-motivate and effectively manage time
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and successfully meet deadlines

Supervision:

The Student Creative Team will be supervised by Duncan McHugh, Digital & Instructional Media Producer, LFS and Lindsay Cuff, Assistant Professor of Teaching in LFS/Forestry.

Training and Mentorship Provided:

The Student Creative Team will receive training from Duncan McHugh at the LFS Learning Centre in the following:
