BCLA Mentorship Program Info Session

Join Pat Cumming and Amy Ashmore for a 1 hour information session about BCLA’s highly successful Mentorship Program and how you can get involved!

The Mentorship Program is designed to link new library professionals with mentors from a variety of different libraries and career backgrounds. Application to the program opens on March 1st, so if you are interested in learning more about the library profession and connecting to professional librarians then come out to this session!

Freedom to Read Week Marathon Reading Event

Freedom to Read Week officially starts tomorrow and runs through March 2nd!

“How can I celebrate this lovely event?” you may be asking yourself.
Well, good news! CLA/ALA is hosting a marathon reading event on
Thursday, February 28th
from 8 am – 8 pm in the Lilloet Room in IKBLC.

“What’s this ‘marathon reading’ business?” you’re probably asking your computer screen.
Well, your computer screen just so happens to have a response! Folks can sign up to read their favourite banned or challenged books for ten minutes. There will be baked goods for sale and a drawing for prizes for anyone who participates.

How do I sign up?!” you’re definitely exclaiming to the universe at large.

Don’t know of any banned books? Not to worry! On the sign up sheet there are loads of links to help you find the perfect banned book for you!

Youth and Technology Panel: Now on YouTube!

For those of you who were unable to catch the wildly successful Youth and Technology Panel which took place at UBC on January 16th we are happy to announce that it is available in two parts on the YAACS YouTube channel.

We had speakers from three different public library systems and a local author/illustrator all sharing their experiences serving children in the digital environment. Topics include teen spaces and programming, hackfests, books apps and digital storytimes.

Come hear Annette DeFaveri, Executive Director of the BCLA and former Manager of Children’s and Youth Services at VPL, talk about the BCLA, what it is, what events they host, and the benefits of membership.
