Seeking Your Financial Aid Stories!

Do you have stories of challenges you have faced in getting financial aid to support your college or university studies, as a student with a disability? If so, we want to hear from you! The National Educational Association of Disabled Students (NEADS) is collecting student narratives on the difficulties of navigating Canada’s student financial aid system. We are especially interested in your experiences with government grants and loans programs. Your stories will inform our advocacy to improve financial aid in Canada for students with disabilities.

Please share your stories with us by confidential email, with the subject header “Financial Aid Stories”, to: info@neads.ca Submissions will be collected until Friday, October 23, 2015, at midnight Pacific Time. All personal identifying information will be edited out of stories prior to compilation for use in communications with the Canada Student Loans Program and provincial/territorial student assistance programs. “Supporting access to post-secondary education and employment for students with disabilities”

Apply for Cerebral Palsy Association of BC bursary – due Aug 14, 2015

The Cerebral Palsy Association of BC proudly offers 10 bursaries of $1,000 each, to any eligible student 17 years and older, with CP, that is currently enrolled in an institution of higher learning, and is planning to continue their studies the following term.

Please note that even if a student has been awarded monies through this fund before, they are still eligible to apply. The application and criteria can be found on the Cerebral Palsy Association of BC’s website. Applications must be received by August 14, 2015.

Apply to National Educational Association of Disabled Students’ (NEADS) Board of Directors – due July 6, 2015

The National Educational Association of Disabled Students (NEADS) is seeking applications to its board of directors in four positions: Quebec Director, Manitoba Director, Saskatchewan Director and Territories Director. All persons interested in a position on the board must be regular members in good standing, that is students with disabilities enrolled in a Canadian post-secondary institution or recent graduates with disabilities who have graduated within the last five years.

The NEADS Board of Directors is composed of eleven seats; there are ten provincial Directors (British Columbia Director, Alberta Director, Saskatchewan Director, Manitoba Director, Ontario Director, Quebec Director, Nova Scotia Director, Newfoundland and Labrador Director, Prince Edward Island Director, New Brunswick Director), one Territorial Director. Candidates for the positions of provincial/territorial Directors must be students or recent graduates with disabilities, residing in and/or attending a post-secondary institution in the geographic location they seek to represent.

NEADS Board members will be expected to attend a minimum of twelve (12) monthly Board teleconferences, as well as one to two in-person Board meetings per year, funding permitting.

Board members are also expected to participate in and chair NEADS standing and project committees, and take part in Committee teleconferences.

Provincial/territorial Board members also represent their Province/Territory on the Board, serve to bring the work of NEADS to their jurisdiction, as well as to bring local issues to the national table. Board members may participate in local, regional and provincial committees and activities, within the framework provided by NEADS mandate and mission.

No prior participation in the disability or student movements is required to join the NEADS Board. Members who have strong skill sets in governance, fundraising, social media and membership/partnership outreach are especially welcome. Any interested and enthusiastic NEADS member with relevant skill sets and a strong work ethic is encouraged to seek a board position.

Time Commitment:

Board members will attend a minimum of 12 teleconferences per year, each lasting up to 2 hours, as well as 1-2 in-person Board retreats per year, dependent upon funding, that typically run Friday-Sunday. Board members are also expected to serve on at least one committee, and attend regular committee meetings by teleconference as required. Communication within the Board is primarily by email and telephone; members are also expected to keep up-to-date with and respond to, as necessary, all correspondence.

Note: Prospective Board members may come from a variety of  backgrounds: for example community service, student leadership, provincial and regional committees, etc.; or may come from none of these backgrounds. Although specific skill sets are not required, prior experience in Board governance will be a strong asset.  Interest in, and experience with, establishing regional and national projects, programs; grant funding and financial management would also be an asset. A strong commitment to participate and engage in board business. All interested members are encouraged to apply; you must have a willingness to learn and apply that learning while on the Board.

Richmond Centre for Disability Ambassador Project

The Richmond Centre for Disability (RCD) is looking for volunteer ambassadors for their RCD Ambassador Project. The goal of the project is to develop a specialized volunteer and citizenship group that will work to enrich the lives of people with disabilities and improve our community while acquiring valuable employment and interpersonal skills.

Crohn’s and Colitis Canada’s AbbVie IBD Scholarship Program

Crohn’s and Colitis Canada is proud to launch the fourth annual AbbVie IBD Scholarship Program.

The AbbVie IBD Scholarship Program recognizes the obstacles faced by students living with Crohn’s and colitis and supports them in rising above their personal challenges in pursuit of their dreams.

Supported by an educational grant from AbbVie, Crohn’s and Colitis Canada will extend ten (10) one-time scholarships of up to $5,000 to students living with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis who are entering into or currently attending a post-secondary educational institution for the Fall semester of 2015.

The scholarship eligibility requirements are as follows:

  • Students diagnosed with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis
  • Students seeking an associate, undergraduate, or graduate degree from a Canadian university; college; or enrolled in a trade school educational diploma
  • Students enrolled in or awaiting acceptance from a Canadian-based post-secondary educational institution for the Fall semester of 2015

B.C. Public Service Work-Able Internship Program

The Work-Able Internship Program is a twelve month BC Public Service work experience program for recent post-secondary graduates with disabilities. This unique program provides learning, coaching and mentorship throughout the internship and interns will gain valuable skills and public service experience.

B.C. Public Service Work-Able Internship Program Full-Time
Salary: $1,627.65 Bi-weekly
Locations: Victoria, Vancouver
Length: Temporary Position from September 1, 2015 to August 31, 2016

Successful applicants will be offered extensive training, growth, and development opportunities, a competitive salary and a balance between work and life commitments.

To be eligible for the Work-Able Internship Program you must:

  • Self-identify as a person with a disability
  • Reside in B.C.

Successful candidates may be asked for supporting documentation regarding their disability to assist in providing accommodation supports. They will also be required to submit documentation that verifies their post-secondary graduation date and may be required to undergo a criminal record check.

Candidates selected to move forward in the hiring process may be assessed on the education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities and competencies as listed in each of the attached job profiles.

National Team – Sitting Volleyball: Learn, Play, Watch

The Canadian National Women’s and Men’s Sitting Volleyball Teams will be holding two training weekends here in the lower mainland in March and April, and hosting a number of community programs as well. NEADS’ Vancouver “Finance Matters” – An Interactive Day on Financial Literacy and Financial Aid

Join the National Educational Association of Disabled Students (NEADS) for “Finance Matters” – An Interactive Day of Learning on Financial Aid and Financial Literacy, in Vancouver, British Columbia, March 20, 2015 at the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown hotel, Crystal Ballroom, 6083 McKay Ave, Burnaby from 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.!

This will be an innovative and educational one-day event with workshops and interactive presentations. The forum will comprise a series of workshops and discussions on a variety of topics including: budgeting and managing money while in school, effective borrowing, accessing student aid, creative saving, financial planning, the Disability Tax Credit and the Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP).

Finance Matters will include a demonstration of the unique financial aid portal developed by NEADS, DisabilityAwards.ca (<http://www.disabilityawards.ca/>http://www.disabilityawards.ca/). Students will learn how to be more successful in seeking funding for their studies and saving for the future. This will enable participants to better manage their finances during school and beyond. Gaining greater understanding of financial aid opportunities will lead to reducing the amount of debt.

There will also be a presentation on B.C.’s exciting new Work-Able: Graduate Internship Program, for post-secondary graduates with disabilities.

The deadline for CHHA Scholarship Applications is fast approaching!

The Canadian Hard of Hearing Association Scholarship Program was established in 2002. This Program is supported by donations of the members of the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association (CHHA) and by the generous contributions from the Algar family, Doreen Laszlo (spouse of Dr. Charles Laszlo) and MED-El. There are currently 4 available Scholarships offered by CHHA.

Applicants to this Scholarship Program must be either hard of hearing, deafened or oral deaf. Eligible applicants may be first-time or returning post-secondary students at a recognized College or University. Students should be registered for a full-time program and intend to return to school in the next academic year.
