ENGL 301 is an exploration into the foundations of formal writing and effective written communication. It guides students through the principles of formal written communication and helps create individuals that are sensitive to the needs of the reader. In addition, the course also maintains standard practices for education in the research processes, and how to create effective proposals to better aid in the students’ academic career. Lastly, the course teaches business writing, drafting business plans, and the writing of job resumes and application letters. The course will be taught through the method of self-studying via textbook looking and class exercises, coupled with the help of peer review to stimulate communication between peers.

My Expectation
In the course, I expect to engage in activities that prepare me for planning and creating an effective job application and resume. As I lack the experience in creating a compelling application, I hope to strengthen these weaknesses in the following months so that I am able to create writing that showcases my assets in an effective and profession manner.

Lastly, I expect to push my boundaries as an effective writer by the end of the term and look forward to learn about creating a professional online presence so that I can broaden my networking strategies.

In the coming weeks I look forward to learning together with you all and best of luck in all your future endeavors.

Unexpectedly, I am an English Major focusing on language and literature. Hello, my name is Aran Chang, and I am currently in my 4th year of my arts degree. I hope to pursue education as my post-graduate degree to work in the field of high school education. During my time off-campus, I used frequent the nearby park to reflect and relax, but with the recent COVID-19 issues, I find the tranquil breeze from my bedside window to be a close-enough replacement. I’m also working towards my volunteer hours for my bED application at a nearby high school as well as after school education program for kids in high school. I find the experiences to be quite enriching, as I find new and more effective ways to communicate with the students. It’s always a pleasure when I find myself learning new things from my students as it reminds me that I a just beginning my journey as an educator. In my own experience as a student, I always find myself pushing the hardest with an educator that strives to bring out the best in their students. From my elementary teachers to my high school teachers, as well as my university professors, I couldn’t be anywhere near where I am today without their guidance and support. This feeling is what struck me to begin down my path as an educator, in hopes that I can help guide the future generation. Subjects that I enjoy outside of English include philosophy (of morality, meaning, and religion), psychology (neurological processes for communication/consciousness), and geography (mineral deposits and lattice formation).

ENGL 301 99A – Technical Writing
University of British Columbia
2329 West Mall
Vancouver, B.C. V6T 1Z4

Dear My Colleagues at English 301:

Please consider my application for a position on your writing team. I am a fourth year English Language and Literature student pursuing a Bachelor’s of English at UBC and aim is to apply to the Bachelors of Education program after I finish my Arts Degree. I would like to be a member of your profession writing group.

I am able to offer my ideas, adept knowledge in English syntax and grammar to ensure that our work maintains an appropriate level of writing that is clear and concise. I am a committed individual, and plan to contribute the required work to accomplish our assignments throughout the course.

My background in English has allowed me to develop the ability to critically analyze information, logically organize and present information, and create appropriate stylistic choices to ensure a clear and concise text for the appropriate audience. My experience with courses at UBC has additionally equipped me with excellent communication and collaboration skills from my involvement in different team projects that require a strong leadership role.

My recent experience at Pathways and Johnston Heights have provided me with opportunities to practice communication and writing for a younger audience. Through this experience, I have developed the ability to create clear and concise audience-focused writing.

I am well-versed in providing detailed and comprehensive revisions when conducting edits to group work. I believe this will ensure consistent quality work produced from our profession writing group. A weakness of mine is the speed at which I conduct research, taking long hours before I decide on a topic of choice. To ensure a timely assignment, I religiously begin my work as early as possible.

I believe my experience and abilities will make me an outstanding asset to your professional writing team and I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to become a member on your writing team. Thank you very much for your time and consideration. If you would like to continue the conversation, please feel free to contact me via email aran@abasa.ca.

Sincerely,

Aran Chang
