Drag Performance and Panel at the Laurel Packinghouse in downtown Kelowna:
Drag as Decolonial and Anti-Racist Resistance
Friday, May 17, 7:30pm
Join us for a drag performance and academic panel held off-campus at the historic Laurel Packinghouse in the entertainment district in Kelowna. Highlighting the importance of drag as an underexplored site of decolonial and anti-racist resistance and creativity in late capitalism, our event will showcase the contributions of queer of colour performers who are mobilizing the aesthetic dimensions of drag to critique white settler racism and colonialism. An academic panel will trace the cultural politics and history of drag in relation to white settler colonialism and racism, featuring Shaka McGlotten (Purchase College-SUNY), Nishant Upadhyay (University of Colorado, Boulder), John Cho (UBC Okanagan), and drag artist Shay Dior in the panel discussion. There is limited shuttle service for 48 passengers on two shuttles on a first-come first-served basis.
Tickets for this event start at $25 per person (early bird pricing before Feb. 29th)
Regular pricing $40 per person.
The maximum capacity for this event is 250 people.

Sncewips Heritage Museum Tour: “How Our Tangible Objects Tell Our Story”
As a visitor, take this tour to learn about the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the syilx (Okanagan) people. The tour starts with a bus ride from the university campus across the bridge over Okanagan Lake to West Kelowna where syilx operated Sncewips (sen-cha-weeps) Heritage Museum is located. A one-hour guided tour offers a look at syilx living history, storytelling, and dialogue. The bus will go back to campus following the tour, or individuals can choose to explore West Kelowna or the surrounding area and return on their own. Ticket price includes both the special group tour and return bus transportation.
$40 per person
The maximum capacity is 50 people.
Okanagan Sunflower tour
This tour will take place on the UBC Okanagan campus and will be led by a syilx (Indigenous Okanagan) knowledge expert. It will occur during a time when the Okanagan sunflower (smúkʷaʔxn, Arrowleaf balsamroot) is in full bloom, on the edge of a Ponderosa pine (sʔatqʷɬp) forest. While the main focus will be on syilx land-based knowledge, participants’ attention and reflection will also be directed towards the multispecies entanglements present on lands occupied by the university, and to educational institutions as emplaced and embodied formations. In designing and delivering this tour, we are committed to fostering an accessible and inclusive place-based experience for participants.
$25.00 per person
The maximum capacity is 25 people.
