Bio

My name is Cathy Liu and I am a fourth year student in the Faculty of Arts majoring in English Literature and minoring in Psychology. Initially starting out in Computer Science, I studied it for two years before I made the switch to English in my third year at UBC.

I have always been drawn towards studying English because language and communication is undoubtedly an important facet of human nature. It is interesting to observe the power and impact words can have through different forms of writing. Personally, I enjoy the freedom and creativity that comes with writing, and studying English has provided me with many new and meaningful perspectives. Compared to my studies in Computer Science, I discovered that I preferred how open-ended English can be, that by having various approaches that can be taken towards the material, there is always an opportunity to improve and expand on my own critical thinking.

As far as professional interests go, I am currently interested in pursuing the field of Education. My most memorable course in high school was my English 11 class because of the teacher that taught it. I was inspired by his ability to teach lessons that were applicable not only to the class, but to life in general. I have always found myself teaching and helping fellow classmates, so naturally, the field of Education became of interest to me. I am particularly interested in teaching high school students rather than elementary because what I look forward to are the discussions and input that they can provide.
