Community Based Participatory Research Courses
This is a new experiential learning opportunity offered by the Department of Sociology. This two-course sequence (with the second course being optional) builds on the International Service Learning program that Dr. Dawn Currie (emeritus professor) helped develop. In 2018/2019 the course will be co-taught by Dr. Kerry Greer and Kari Grain.
The course is open to all Faculty of Arts students, ideally in their third or fourth (or fifth!) year of study.
Students select one of three streams to enter:
1) the 3-credit CBPR Approaches (Soci 495 term 2) ONLY stream;
2) the 3-credit CBPR Approaches (Soci 495 term 2) and 3-credit CBPR Applications International (summer 2019) course with the international service learning component; or
3) the 3-credit CBPR Approaches (Soci 495 term 2) and 3-credit CBPR Applications Local (summer 2019) course with a local service learning component.
I encourage you to read through this site as you make your decision. And please remember, this is a new course and the material on this site will be updated as I figure out better ways of communicating and organizing this course!
Enrolling
Students will have time during term one to decide which stream they would like to participate in and efforts will be made to accommodate all interested students. If you are interested in learning about CBPR, but do not want to participate in the applied learning part, please go ahead and register for the term 2 course. However, if you would like to participate in the applied learning course either internationally or domestically, it is necessary to apply and then you will be registered by staff. Please see more information under “International Applications” or “Local Applications” headings for more information.
