Dancing with the Cranes

Dancing with the Cranes gives an understanding of birth, life and death. Chi’s momma is soon to have a baby, but Chi is having a hard time being happy about it. Chi misses Temma (her grandma), who has passed away. Chi’s momma and daddy help ease the pain of losing Temma and help Chi to understand life and death as a part of nature. Chi soon finds herself feeling comforted, knowing Temma will always be a part of her and looking forward to the new baby who will be a part of their lives.

Jean-Charles Pandosy

En 1847, à 23 ans, le marseillais Jean-Charles Pandosy est envoyé comme missionnaire en Oregon par les Oblats. Dix ans plus tard, l’armée le chasse des États-Unis. Il part en Colombie-Britannique et fonde une mission à l’Anse au sable qui deviendra Kelowna. Jusqu’à sa mort par une nuit glaciale en 1891, Pandosy continuera de fonder des missions à travers la Colombie-Britannique et sur l’île de Vancouver. Parmi les rares personnes éduquées de ce vaste territoire, il agit comme notaire, représentant de la loi et de l’Église, et comme promoteur de l’agriculture dans la vallée de l’Okanagan.

Dans son récit historique très documenté, Rivère suit Pandosy tout au long de ses aventures nord-américaines. Se révèle une histoire épique, remplie de drame, de misère et de la foi d’un homme.

Edmond Rivère est professeur agrégé à UBC Okanagan, Kelowna. Lui-même originaire de Marseille, et curieux des exploits de son prédécesseur à Kelowna, il étudia sa vie et sa correspondance afin de retracer son parcours étonnant.

Edmond Rivère is an associate professor at UBC Okanagan in Kelowna. He was born in Provence, France – just a few kilometres away from the birthplace of Charles Pandosy. For many years a resident of Kelowna, Rivère became fascinated with the history of his fellow countryman.

Author

Ashley Little received a BFA in Creative Writing and Film Studies from the University of Victoria and an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of British Columbia. Her book The New Normal won the Sheila A. Egoff Children’s Literature Prize, and Anatomy of a Girl Gang won the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize, was a finalist for the City of Vancouver Book Award, longlisted for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award and has been optioned for television. Confessions of a Teenage Leper is Ashley’s fifth novel. Ashley lives in British Columbia with her partner, their daughter, and her toy poodle, Huxley.

Over a distinguished academic career, the Canadian philosopher and scholar John Woods has written on a rich variety of topics central to contemporary philosophy. These include the history and philosophy of logic, deviant logics, inductive and abductive reasoning, informal reasoning, fallacy theory, the logic of fiction, epistemology, and abortion and euthanasia. Not only has Woods’ work been significant in itself, it has also stimulated others working in these fields.

Mistakes of Reason is a tribute to Woods and contains twenty-six new essays by leading Canadian and international philosophers. The essays are accompanied by commentaries by Woods himself, creating a unique dialogue between Woods and his colleagues. Editors Kent A. Peacock and Andrew D. Irvine have grouped the works under the themes of Reality, Knowledge, Logic and Language, Reasoning, and Values. The essays evaluate Woods’ work and celebrate the generous contribution that he has made to Canada’s intellectual development over the past forty years.

Editors

Andrew Irvine is a professor of Philosophy at UBC’s Okanagan Campus. He received his PhD from the University of Sydney for work in the Department of Traditional and Modern Philosophy on mathematical truth and scientific realism. Since then he has published and lectured on topics in the Philosophy of Mathematics, the History and Philosophy of Logic, and the Philosophy of Law. He is especially interested in the work of the twentieth-century philosopher, essayist and social critic, Bertrand Russell. He is co-author of the logic textbook Argument and author of the stage play Socrates on Trial.

Kent A. Peacock is a professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Lethbridge.

Ceci est mon corps relate l’éducation sentimentale d’un jeune garçon homosexuel issu d’un milieu socioéconomique défavorisé de l’Est ontarien. Le texte traverse les frontières de genre (littéraire et sexuel), d’orientation sexuelle, de langue, de race et de classe en proposant d’analyser la décomposition d’une famille et la recomposition d’une autre, la chosen family queer qui permettra au personnage de s’épanouir de manière saine et authentique. Maniant les théories queer et le genderfuck, abordant la honte, la dépression, la maladie, la solitude et le sexe compulsif, Michael V. Smith crée, avec Ceci est mon corps, une oeuvre complexe, écrite dans une langue accessible permettant à un vaste lectorat d’entrer en relation avec son histoire, racontée sans fard, afin d’y trouver quelque chose comme une forme queer d’humanité, construite à partir de la vulnérabilité la plus totale. « Je me suis souvent promis, au fil des ans, de tempérer mon ardeur pour le sexe en public, le sexe anonyme, les petites vites, le sexe ailleurs que dans un lit, mais à mesure que passaient les semaines solitaires, ma détermination finissait par chanceler. J’avais l’impression que tout le monde sauf moi avait percé le code secret gay puisque j’étais incapable de convaincre qui que ce soit de me fréquenter. Michael V. Smith is an associate professor at the University of British Columbia, where he teaches creative writing. His first novel, Cumberland, was shortlisted for the Amazon.ca / Books in Canada First Novel Award. His short fiction has won the Western Magazine Gold Award for Fiction and been nominated for the Journey Prize. In 2007, Smith received the Dayne Ogilvie Award for Emerging Gay Writers and Vancouver’s Community Hero of the Year Award. A native of Cornwall, Ontario, Smith currently lives in Kelowna, BC.

Grounded in the ubiquitous, ever-changing matter of fashion, Cultures of Femininity in Modern Fashion places women at the heart of modern culture. Rich and cohesive, this collection demonstrates how fashion shaped and emerged from diverse cultures of femininity and modernity. By recovering fashion as a dynamic and far-reaching force in culture and politics, the volume examines the nuanced and conflicted terrain of femininity from the mid-nineteenth to the early twentieth century. Revealing the inextricability of fashion from modern life, the volume argues for placing gender, everyday life, and materiality at the forefront of our accounts of modernity.

She joins the chess club with her friend Roy, earns a part in the school production of The Wizard of Oz, buys an awesome wig, lands a crappy job, gets invited to the prom (by three different guys!) and helps her parents re-enter the land of the living. What Tamar lacks in tact (and hair), she makes up for in sheer tenacity.

Female Piety and the Invention of American Puritanism reconsiders the standard critical view that women’s religious experiences were either silent consent or hostile response to mainstream Puritan institutions. In this groundbreaking new approach to American Puritanism, Bryce Traister asks how gendered understandings of authentic religious experience contributed to the development of seventeenth-century religious culture and to the “post-religious” historiography of Puritanism in secular modernity. He argues that women were neither marginal nor hostile to the theological and cultural ambitions of seventeenth-century New England religious culture and, indeed, that radicalized female piety was in certain key respects the driving force of New England Puritan culture.

Uncovering the feminine interiority of New England Protestantism, Female Piety and the Invention of American Puritanism positions itself against prevalent historical arguments about the rise of secularism in the modern West. Traister demonstrates that female spirituality became a principal vehicle through which Puritan identity became both absorbed within and foundational for pre-national secular culture. Engaging broadly with debates about religion and secularization, national origins and transnational unsettlements, and gender and cultural authority, this is a foundational reconsideration both of American Puritanism itself and of “American Puritanism” as it has been understood in relation to secular modernity.

Author

Bryce Traister is the Dean of the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies and a professor of English at the University of British Columbia (Okanagan). He studies and teaches courses in early American literature and culture. He holds a BA and PhD in English from the University of California, Berkeley, and taught for 20 years at Western University in London, Ontario, before joining the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies in 2017 He is the author, most recently, of Female Piety and the Invention of American Puritanism, published by Ohio State University Press, and is the editor of American Literature and the New Puritan Studies, (September 2017). His current work includes a second edited collection for Cambridge, The Cambridge Companion to Early American Literature.

Human Rights and Transnational Solidarity in Cold War Latin America

With the end of the global Cold War, the struggle for human rights has emerged as one of the most controversial forces of change in Latin America. Many observers seek the foundations of that movement in notions of rights and models of democratic institutions that originated in the global North. Challenging that view, this volume argues that Latin American community organizers, intellectuals, novelists, priests, students, artists, urban pobladores, refugees, migrants, and common people have contributed significantly to new visions of political community and participatory democracy. These local actors built an alternative transnational solidarity from below with significant participation of the socially excluded and activists in the Global South.

Edited by Jessica Stites Mor, this book offers fine-grained case studies that show how Latin America’s re-emerging Left transformed the struggles against dictatorship and repression of the Cold War into the language of anti-colonialism, socioeconomic rights, and identity.

Jessica Stites Mor is an associate professor of History at The University of British Columbia (Okanagan). She received her PhD in history at Yale University in 2008. She was a visiting fellow at the Instituto Ravignani of the Universidad de Buenos Aires from 2004-2007. She currently serves as the editor-in-chief of the Canadian Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Studies. She is the author of Transition Cinema: Political Filmmaking and the Argentine Left since 1968 (Pittsburgh, 2012), co-editor of El Pasado que miramos (The Past We View, Paídos, 2009) with Claudia Feld, and editor of Human Rights and Transnational Solidarity in Cold War Latin America (Wisconsin, 2013). She has also co-edited a special issue on South-South Solidarity for the Journal of Latin American and Iberian Research (2014), and authored several other journal articles.
