Ethnomathematics

Most of us are familiar with the western concepts of math.  However, other cultures also have fascinating mathematical systems.  Ethnomathematics can help students learn math in relation to different cultures, as well as broadening their perspectives on mathematics.  This site introduces many examples of Ethnomathemaics, especially from old cultures.

Games for the Aboriginal People of North America

This website lists 3 main types of games: game of chance, strategy and life-style based mathematics.  These games came from the aboriginal nations, and they sometimes have different meaning and are used as learning tools for young children.  This is a great website to incorporate aboriginal ideas into our regular math curriculum.

Math Catcher: Mathematics Through Aboriginal Storytelling

This is an outreach program presented by SFU for aboriginal  elementary and high school students.  This project is sponsored by various organizations, including U.B.C. and NSERC.  The goal is to ‘teach math in the cultural context of students, as well as teaching students how to solve problems at an early age “.   They use aboriginal storytelling,  pictures, and hands-on activities to teach math to students.   They also have camps for aboriginal students to accelerate in math and English.

National Aboriginal Day

June 21 is National Aboriginal Day in Canada.  This website has links to various learning resources about the aboriginal culture, as well as the aboriginal history in Canada.  There is also a section about Residential Schools Settlement Agreement, which was a topic covered in Module 1 readings.

Reporting in Indigenous Communities

This site was founded by Duncan McCue, a CBC reporter based in Vancouver.  He came up with the idea to offer an online guide to help journalists who write report about indigenous communities.  McCue’s idea was supported by the Stanford University.  What’s the most valuable about his website is the “Teachings” corner, which allows journalists to share their wisdom about indigenous communities.  The “Resources” section also provides an impressive list of useful links about the aboriginal culture and communities.
