Results

For context, there is reduction of ALL reported crimes in Vancouver from 2019 to 2020 and 2021. The overall reduction of crime count from 2019 (Pre-COVID) of 48,307 to 37,502 in 2020 (Lockdown) is a decrease of 22.37%. Reduction from 2019 (Pre-COVID) of 48,307 to 32,071 in 2021 (Restriction) is a decrease of 33.61%. These results are significant and most likely not by chance or coincidence.

 

For the five crime types in the study, both of the COVID years and its crimes were lower than 2019 except in B&E Commercial in 2020 (Lockdown) and Mischief in 2020 (Lockdown). These two crime types of B&E Commercial and Mischief increased during the lockdown COVID year. The largest decrease from 2019 to 2020 and 2019 to 2021 was Auto Theft. The second largest decrease in 2019 to 2020 was Theft. The second largest decrease in 2019 to 2021 was B&E Residential.
