“Frankish Phantoms”: Echoes from the Carolingian Palaces (8th-10th Centuries)

Baroque Lute Music by Sylvius Leopold Weiss
The eagerly awaited return visit of acclaimed lutenist Robert Barto, who has focused his career on the lute music of Weiss, the greatest lute composer of the late Baroque, and a much admired contemporary of JS Bach.

“Love and Death in Vienna”: Baroque Music from Austria
Montreal’s acclaimed ensemble Les Voix Baroques returns with a programme of vocal and instrumental music by various composers working in Vienna in the early Baroque, including Bertali’s moving sepolcro “Maria Maddalena”.

Henry Purcell’s “King Arthur” – A Restoration Spectacular
Following the stunning performance of Purcell’s “The Faerie Queene” at the 2009 Festival, the centrepiece for this year will be an even more elaborate work by Purcell: the music for his Restoration spectacular “King Arthur”.

“Bach and Beyond”: Baroque and Classical Chamber Music
The faculty members of the Baroque Instrumental Programme conclude the Festival with an instrumental programme of chamber music by Bach and his contemporaries, and by composers heralding the new classical era.
