GSS Weekly Newsletter!‏

Dear Graduate Students,

It’s a beautiful four day week in Vancouver (= beautiful²); the sun is shining, the air is warm, and next week is Reading Week! This week a lot of the news comes from our Advocacy desk, but there’s also some fun stuff coming up in the coming weeks so don’t miss the heads up!

GSS Advocacy:
– The Canadian government’s Federal Skilled Worker Program has an eligibility stream that is open to international students who are pursuing or who have completed doctoral (PhD) studies at Canadian institutions. The GSS would like to hear about your experience with the program in order to advocate for the changes needed to help the program work efficiently. Please help us by filling out this super quick survey! https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/XRNDL3D
Please contact vpexternal@gss.ubc.ca with any follow up questions or issues you may have.

– The National Educational Association of Disabled Students (NEADS) is conducting an important online survey examining the experiences of, and barriers faced by graduate students with disabilities. Please take the time to fill it if it applies to you. http://fluidsurveys.com/s/NEADSGrad/

– We are pleased to note that the federal government has revised the VISA application system. All international student applications will now be automatically considered applications for multiple-entry visas, rather than the previous situation which required individuals to apply for either a single or multiple entry VISA. This change streamlines the application process, an issue for which we have been advocating this year through the Canadian Alliance of Student Associations (CASA). The new VISA application system eliminates confusion for international students and results in more students receiving multiple-entry visas.

GSS Social & Recreational:
– Save the Date! Salsa Night is coming to the GSS on March 7th! Whether you’ve never stepped foot on a dance floor in your life, or are fluent in the language of dance, this event has something for you! We’ll give you a free salsa lesson, give you a chance to strut your stuff salsa style, and then let the evening’s inspiration, good vibes (and cheap drinks!) suggest the rest of the moves! Tickets go on sale next week at just $5 for everyone! (Grad and non-Grad!)

– St. Patrick’s Day comes to GSS on March 14th, and we’re planning the best night ever soSave the Date & Line up something Clover Green! Tickets go on sale next week at $5 for Grads and $7 for Non-Grads, drinks will be cheap or, if you have the luck of the Irish, maybe even free!

PS: You might want to check out the Graduate Research In A Day program schedule. It’s being organized by the Research Commons. We’re told they’re throwing in a pizza lunch in addition to all their great programing. Sun is shining people, in all kinds of ways.

warmest,

Ngwatilo

Call for Proposals: AESA / IAIE Joint Conference

The American Educational Studies Association (AESA) & the International Association of Intercultural Education (IAIE) joint
conference

October 29th-November 2nd,

2014 Hyatt Regency Toronto, Canada

Conference System open for proposal submission: March 1, 2014 (5pm EST).

Call for Proposals

For the 2014 annual conference the American Educational Studies Association (AESA) and the International Association of Intercultural Education (IAIE) will join forces to create a truly global community of scholars in one of the most diverse cities in the world. Each organization will follow a separate submission and review process that will unite into one multinational, multilingual program.

CONFERENCE THEME:

Reconceptualizing Diversity: Engaging with Histories, Theories, Practices, and Discursive Strategies in Global Contexts

The American Educational Studies Association (AESA) and the International Association for Intercultural Education (IAIE) are
presently accepting proposals for their joint conference “Reconceptualizing Diversity: Engaging with Histories, Theories,
Practices, and Discursive Strategies in Global Contexts.” Together we will provide a critical space for sociohistorical, political and
philosophical dialogues focused on reframing diversity within a global context. In particular, we are interested in submissions that address diversity as a multifaceted and dynamic idea as well as the structures that transform, maintain, and reproduce the many intersectionalities of identity. By focusing on colonialism, settler ideologies, capitalism, and neoliberalism, among other related topics we can resituate diversity in a global context.  Turning to issues of transnational immigration, cosmopolitan citizenships, and globalized knowledge networks, we might find new approaches to equity and social justice in education.

GENERAL CALL:

The AESA Program Committee for 2014 invites proposals on all topics
related to the broad field of educational studies including Social
Foundations of Education, its traditional scholarly domain. Proposals
may be submitted for individual papers, symposiums, panels, and
alternative format sessions through April 15, 2014. The committee
welcomes proposals from a full range of theoretical, disciplinary, and
interdisciplinary perspectives that include the following educational
emphases: social foundations of education, cultural studies of
education, curriculum theory and curriculum studies, comparative and
international education studies, and educational policy and
leadership. While all proposals of AESA quality are welcome,
especially encouraged are those that specifically address this year’s
theme, which will be highlighted in the program.

Submission deadline:

All proposals must be submitted electronically to the Online
Conference System (OCS) via the AESA website. It will open March 1,
2014 (5:00pm EST) and close on April 15, 2014 (11:59pm CST).
Participants are encouraged to plan ahead. Notifications of proposals’
acceptance or rejections will sent by July 15th, 2014.

ABOUT AESA

The American Educational Studies Association (AESA) was established in
1968 as an international learned society for students, teachers,
research scholars, and administrators who are interested in the
foundations of education. AESA is a society primarily comprised of
college and university professors and students who teach and research
in the field of education utilizing one or more of the liberal arts
disciplines of philosophy, history, politics, sociology, anthropology,
or economics as well as comparative/international and cultural
studies. The purpose of social foundations study is to bring
intellectual resources derived from these areas to bear in developing
interpretive, normative, and critical perspectives in education, both
inside of and outside of schools.

ABOUT IAIE

Since 1984 the International Association of Intercultural Education
(IAIE) has brought together educators and activists interested in
diversity and equity issues in education. This is defined quite
broadly, and includes among other topics, social justice, human
rights, pluralism in post-colonial, post-conflict and post-communist
countries, active citizenship, anti-racist education, migration and
indigenous minority issues, feminist and queer theory, bilingual and
multilingual language studies, ability studies, interfaith dialogue,
genocide and Holocaust education, and critical pedagogy. These topics
are also the focus of the organization’s Intercultural Education
journal, published 6 times a year.
