Get Your Work Published

The EDST Blog is curated and edited by graduate students, and welcomes submissions from all members of the EDST community, including students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners.

Submit Your Post in 3 Easy Steps!

Step 1: Prepare Your Idea

Think about what you’d like to share, any topic related to education is welcome. We encourage reflections on community, but all themes are invited.

Faculty & Staff – You might share:

  • Reflections on teaching or professional practice
  • Research summaries, tributes, or opinion pieces
  • Program updates or behind-the-scenes perspectives

Alumni – You might share:

  • Career reflections and lessons learned
  • Community or professional projects you’re involved in

Students – You might share:

  • A class assignment, Research Day presentation, or academic paper adapted into a short post (500–1,000 words)
  • Creative work — poetry, video, images, or multimedia storytelling
  • Reflections on a current global issue, or reflections on education in communities

Step 2: Create Your Post

Write, record, or design your piece. Blog submissions can take many forms:

  • Written posts: Personal reflections, essays, narratives, or co-authored pieces
  • Creative posts: Poetry, images, audio, video, or animations
  • Series proposals: Consider submitting a series of posts on a shared topic (please include a sample post or outline).

Keep your submission concise and engaging. Aim for ~500–1,000 words for written posts.

Step 3: Submit Your Post

When your post is ready, send it to Ella Wright, Blog Editor, at edstblog.editor@ubc.ca. Please include the following in your submission email:

  • A short description of your post
  • Relevant multimedia files, such as images, audio, or video (if applicable)
  • Your name and affiliation (e.g., EDST PhD Candidate, EDST Staff, etc.)

Once submitted, our editorial team will review your post and be in touch.

What’s the purpose of the EDST Blog?

The EDST Blog exists to serve and amplify the voices of EDST students. Funded by the Department of Educational Studies, the blog supports early career researchers in developing their research communication and writing skills. The Blog Editor position is part of this commitment, offering mentorship and a space for students to share their ideas, reflect on their academic journeys, and engage with the broader EDST community.

Why should I post on the EDST Blog?

Posting on the EDST Blog is a great way to share your ideas with a wider audience. It’s an official, UBC-hosted platform that’s widely read by the EDST community and beyond. Your post can:

  • Build your academic profile—add it to your CV!
  • Track the progression of your ideas over time.
  • Engage with the academic and broader community—spark conversation, invite feedback, and connect with others in your field.

Whether you’re testing a concept or sharing polished work, the blog is a space for dialogue and discovery.

How long does it take for my post to be published?

We aim to have your post reviewed and published within 10 business days of submission. The editorial team will notify you once your post is live. Occasionally, during busy periods, it may take a little longer—but we’ll always keep you updated!

I have no idea how to write for a blog audience! Any tips?

Don’t worry! Writing for a blog is different from writing academic papers—it’s more conversational, clear, and concise. The point of our blog is to help developing researchers to practice in a safe, supported space!

Here are some tips to get started:

  • Use short paragraphs and clear subheadings for easier reading.
  • Write in plain language—avoid heavy jargon.
  • Engage your reader: Start with a personal anecdote or thought-provoking question.
  • Keep it concise: Aim for 500–1,000 words.

What if my post is contentious or political?

It’s okay to write about challenging or political topics—critical discussions are part of what makes our academic community vibrant. However, it’s important to remember that this blog does not represent the views of the university, Faculty, or department.

Since we are a University-hosted blog, we must adhere to UBC’s Academic Freedom guidelines. These guidelines protect the right to express diverse viewpoints while ensuring responsible and respectful engagement.

Can I submit multimedia or creative work?

Absolutely! The EDST Blog encourages a variety of formats beyond traditional written posts. You can submit:

  • Poetry, visual art, or photography
  • Audio or video content
  • Multimedia storytelling (e.g., combining text, images, and video)

If you’re submitting multimedia, please ensure the file format is accessible (e.g., JPEG, MP4, or PDF) and include a brief written description or artist’s statement to provide context.
