FreshGrade: The Future of Assessment

As we progress through the 21st century, digital assessment tools are gradually replacing more traditional methods of reporting. FreshGrade is a learning technology that takes on an innovative approach to student assessment. This online platform is a digital portfolio that showcases student learning. It allows teachers to interact with both students and parents to share, reflect, and enhance learning. FreshGrade can be easily accessed through the parent, student, or teacher apps which can be downloaded onto a mobile device. By taking photos and videos of students as they engage in classroom activities, educators are able to capture special moments in the midst of the learning. Parents often see the result of school projects, but rarely have the opportunity to look at the process. This reporting outlet adds value to the result by showing parents the experience behind the construction. FreshGrade’s flexible gradebook connects with student portfolios to seamlessly integrate student work and assessments. It gives teachers the option to provide both quantitative and qualitative feedback on student work. Essentially, this assessment tool tracks progress in a meaningful way reflecting each student’s personal learning journey throughout the year.

In the book Digital Portfolios, Matt Renwick promotes the use of digital assessment tools suggesting that assessment is messy. This messiness includes the day-to-day, in-the-moment assessment that uncovers information to help structure teaching and learning. According to Renwick, these assessments provide a fuller picture of a student’s abilities.
