Brilliant

Brilliant is a mobile education app for those who are interested in learning or practicing math or science in a fun way. Brilliant can be used by everyone as they have various levels (they advertise ages 10 through 110). They claim to help you learn math and science through conceptual quizzes that are both entertaining and educational.

For real math or science lovers, you can participate in the Problem of the Week, where you and other members around the world try to figure out the problem. You can discuss math problems with other math lovers. You can also sign up for math courses on a large number of topics (over 60 courses to choose from). You can then choose beginner, intermediate, or advance and then jump into the course with others who want to sharpen their skills as well.

I think students can really benefit from the app for numerous reasons. First, the app developers have made learning math or science fun with a sense of community. It looks like people help one another and you know that people in your courses are at the same level as you. Also, the courses potentially present another way of learning about a particular subject. Sometimes a student gets home and sits down to do their homework and struggles. Here, they could take a quick refresher course and hear the topic addressed from another angle…which might make more sense to them. Lastly, it’s a great way to spend free time. Instead of scrolling mindlessly, try playing a math game to keep your mind moving and learning.
