Teaching and learning with decentralized social networks: Friendica and the Free Network

I think a lot of us use, have considered using, and/or would like to use social media as a learning tool, but have concerns about asking students to provide more personal information and content to corporations that put it to their own use. This issue is especially relevant given the news cycle of the last few years. Yet it is hard to ignore the opportunities that social networks lend to education, especially beyond the confines of the classroom. This is particularly relevant for mobile learning as these are the preferred devices for accessing social media. Therefore, a social media network that provides all the obvious benefits of social media for education (and possibly much more), with none of the concerns, is a great resource. I make the argument that Friendica, or any of the Free Network platforms can do just that here: https://medium.com/welands-smithy/teaching-and-learning-with-decentralized-social-networks-friendica-and-the-fediverse-d2a7afa831bd
