Ground News app

Ground news is a news comparison app where users can read or watch news stories from over 50,000 global sources and preview the bias or political leaning of the source that published the story. This is a great tool for critical media literacy and has both free and paid (99 cents/month) versions. Both allow access to 50,000 sources but the paid version allows users to track their own news bias and see coverage analysis along with other features.

I’ve created a short demo by taking a screen recording with my iPhone’s default software and by using TikTok to record audio over the top of it. Enjoy.

I think one of the best parts of this app is that it tracks your bias (in the paid version). This could be a practical way to address the way extreme views tend to be reinforced because we follow people, stories and organizations that confirm our beliefs.

Could we see something like this appear on social media platforms? That would require a shift from simply outputing information into the content word and actually having our content mirrored back to us by way of a summary of our biases and behaviours. Very interesting!

This looks like an excellent app, Mel, particularly as more and more “fake news” and conspiracy theories are circulating in social media.I see it being a useful tool for just about anyone, to help us get closer to the truth. I can also see it being very helpful in education, for students to learn not only the value of keeping a critical eye on news stories, but also a straightforward method to help them do this.

This seems like a really awesome tool for educators, especially those within the social sciences. I’m going to bring it up with my colleagues this week and see if they’re familiar with the app and get their thoughts on it. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for sharing Mel! It’s great to see an app that points out potential biases in stories! I’ve always found a lot of news stories biased and misleading, so it’s awesome that Ground News is helping readers understand potential skews in the stories. I also really liked your tiktok video. It’s short and to the point!
