Augmented Reality in Action

The article below describes the use of augmented reality in knee surgery and demonstrates how a truly mobile experience, unbounded by the restrictions of a screen-based mobile device is changing the way the world works and how it is being perceived. I believe very strongly that the confines of a rectangular, rigid device with continue to limit the utility of mobile devices. Until we break out of the paradigm, we will be stuck with larger and larger devices until we are carting around laptops to have a truly useful experience on the move.

Now, the Wall Street Journal has done a decent job at their mobile experience (if you ignore their subscription begging) but that is not hard with the text heavy nature of their content.

This is fascinating, Stephen! The improvements in precision that this AR technology allows a surgeon look to be extremely valuable. With the delicate nature of knee surgery, the ability to “see” these minuscule adjustments could make quite a difference for the surgeon and the patient. I think we are only beginning to see the possibilities that AR offers in many fields, and as an educator I’m excited about how this kind of technology will benefit students and teachers in the near future.
