(A1) The Use of AI Image Makers in the Elementary Classroom

I chose to look at AI technology for this assignment, as the rapidly developing is becoming more and more important in the modern world. Specifically, I tackled the use of Hotpot.ai image generation in an Elementary setting for the purposes of enhancing writing lessons, and how that links to the topic of AI in school. Please take a look at the slideshow.

Thank you for your interesting presentation. It should be noted that AIs don’t technically “create” images in the sense that humans do. They scan billions of images, from natural photos to digital art seeking out keywords, and identifiable images and compiling them together into a new image. These images that it scans, are where it draws its data from. The problem is that, AI generated images, that are heavily based on pre-existing images are never credited back to the original source data. For example, I could say I wanted a picture of a purple elf holding a broadsword, and wearing battle armour. There could be an image almost exactly like this on a free digital art portfolio site like Deviantart, and if an AI image creation uses 98% of that artist’s digital work for their basis, they are never credited for it. There have been cases where AI has taken so many elements of some artists works, that their signature is actually visible in the generated AI image because the AI wasn’t able to recognize it as a signature, and included it in the final product. While I appreciate some of the creations made with AI images and have played with the technology before, the essentially untraceable plagiarism that often occurs makes me weary and uncomfortable on an educational and ethical level.

Thanks for sharing your presentation on AI image makers. I have always heard of how well it creates art and have seen a few but have yet to consider implementing it in the classroom. I like encouraging students to use such tools for their stories to make the process more efficient and motivating. In addition, the process allows the students to summarize their stories and use creativity to develop appropriate and detailed keywords. I often use images to prompt creative writing; sometimes, I struggle to find engaging images. Reading over your slides, I am excited to try generating images using Hotpot.ai to create images for their writing and storytelling.
