Using H5P and ChatGPT to create interactive assessment

Posted in KNOWLEDGE MILL, Mobile Education, and uncategorized (flotsam)

I wanted to introduce H5P, a tool that allows you to create interactive objects for low-stakes assessments or to gamify learning. The output is designed to be accessible on mobile devices.

The tool is open source and enables the creation of HTML5-based interactive objects that can be embedded in various platforms, including Canvas, Moodle, and WordPress. At UBC, for example, H5P is available through the open-source WordPress plugin, which is free for UBC students, faculty, and staff.

One neat feature of H5P is that some content types, such as question sets, can be easily created, especially when using ChatGPT. Instructions on how to create H5P object with ChatGPT can be found here:

Below is an example of Question type H5P that I have created with the help from ChatGPT:

Let me know what did you think about this!
Do you see yourself using this tool in the classroom?

Disclaimer: I have used ChatGPT5 to create the quiz above. In addition, I have also used ChatGPT to improve the grammar of this article that I posted.

Thanks for sharing this! I think using H5P together with ChatGPT is a really creative way to design low-stakes, mobile-friendly assessments. What I find most valuable is how this approach lowers the barrier for teachers—making it easier to create personalized quizzes without needing advanced technical skills. It also shows how fast we can move from idea to implementation when AI helps with drafting content.

I especially like the potential of taking this beyond simple recall questions. For example:
    • Prompt-to-Prototype: ChatGPT can help teachers quickly generate question sets that align with learning goals, including distractors and feedback.
    • Interactive options: Using H5P’s branching or video features allows for deeper engagement, where students make choices and reflect on outcomes.
    • Accessibility: Testing on small screens and adding captions or alt text ensures it works smoothly across mobile devices.

Looking ahead, I can imagine connecting this to AR or MR virtual word. Inspired by projects like DeepMind’s Genie 3, teachers might one day create playground with lightweight virtual environments so students not only answer questions but also experience concepts in action.

Let’s think together that which learning outcomes do you think would be stronger if students practiced in an interactive environment rather than just answering a quiz?

Thank you for sharing! I like the example usage that you mentioned above as well . If the H5P content that is created align with learning objectives, learners can benefit from DOER effect where if the learners have more opportunity to practice the concept through interactive activities, it will improve their learning outcome overall https://jrdingwall.ca/blogwall/the-doer-effect-and-h5p/

Pretty cool Rie, thanks for sharing. I’m saving this resource. Quick question though; I see how to have ChatGPT make the H5P code for the multiple choice interactive, but how do you get that HTML code into WordPress to create an interactive in a blog post like this?

      You’re welcome!
In WordPress, there’s “HTML block” which allows you to insert HTML code.

You can add HTML by going to +>Custom HTML. ,then paste the HTML that you have created on H5P.
