Christy’s introduction.

Hello all, this is Christy Hui from Hong Kong. In addition to taking MET courses, I am currently doing research at Ash Center of Harvard Kennedy School as a visiting fellow. My research interests include democratic development, innovative governance and media literacy. Nowadays, online space can be a useful communication channel as well as instrument for collecting data and delivering messages. Accurate analyses of relevant data is important to improving the processes of decision-making across all sectors of government, business and society due to its impact on operational efficiencies, cost and risk reduction. At the same time, how these data can be put into ethical and constructive use can be a challenging process.

As most of you may be familiar with the popular face detection API below, I chose to share this image not just because it showed that I seemed younger than my actual age (perhaps just a part of the reason!). I also wanted to point out that big data are incredibly complex; even though the computational system as such has extensively studied human features that determine the predictive analytics of age and gender based on various indicators including shape and texture. Data are usually unstructured, incomplete and difficult to understand and manage. Statistics are meaningless without context and value; therefore, our ability to effectively gather, make sense and make use of information continues to be a vital skill for the 21st century. This includes the process of reading and analyzing textual data.

I am looking forward to working and learning with you all in this term!

  1. Hi Christy! You bring a valuable perspective to this course with all of your current research activities. I look forward to hearing more about it throughout the summer.

  2. Hi Chrissy, interesting your comments on web spaces, web data and predictive tools. Text relating to computational tools could be another “text” category perhaps? (Used by a specialist group).
When you think about media literacy, are you considering text as words on a screen or all types of media on a screen? will be good to hear your perspective.

  3. Thanks very much for all your comments, nice to meet you all! I am sorry about the confusion, Janette, yes I was referring to “text” by a specialist group, or coding, when I was talking about computational tools. When we design the framework for media literacy we want to focus on cultivating the ability to evaluate information critically, wether it’s in the form of text (written messages including signs and symbols), photo, video, or any type of media messages on screen or off screen depending on its source. I would love to hear your thoughts and have more in-depth discussion with you! 🙂

    Cheers,

    Christy

  4. Hi Christy,

I am not familiar with the face detection app…. not sure I want to, now!! LOL However, as long as it puts a person on the younger side of the numbers…. 🙂

    Thanks for sharing!
    Cheers,
    Tina
