Jesse Costello’s Introduction

Assorted Computers and Tablets

I have chosen this picture because it illustrates a shift in technology that I believe will dramatically alter writing and communication in the coming years. From right to left we can see a desktop computer, to a laptop, and onto tablets and smart phones. I think that this shift is important because the capability of these devices has shifted from programing and creating with desktops, to accessing your work anywhere with laptops, to using apps on smartphones and tablets. It seems that as the devices become more user friendly their capabilities have also decreased somewhat.

I think the move away from keyboards has coincided with increasingly short texts, tweets, YouTube videos, and vines. I’m not sure if technology is driven this change or simply adapting to it, but I’m curious to see how communication has changed in the near future.  I hope we don’t lose the art of writing as users demand and consume ever shorter content.

Introduction

I am currently a grade 4/5 classroom teacher in Vancouver, British Columbia. I have been teaching for a number of years now. As my career started I explored teaching a wide range of grades – from 2 all the way to 12 – but I think I have found my place teaching around grade 5 students.

I incorporate technology frequently in my classroom, especially typing with the Smart board as unfortunately my writing isn’t really up to the standards of an elementary school teacher. I like how easy it is to incorporate a range of media into lessons when you have access to technology and the web.

I love reading and writing with my class. We are currently publishing stories as a year end project along with creating book trailers on our iPads. I find iPads wonderful for accessing information and working with pictures/videos, but worthless to write with.

This is my 5th ETEC course and I’m excited to learn more about writing this year!

  1. Hi Jesse! Great to see you again! 🙂

I love the image you chose and how you expanded that thought. I worry as well that we will loose the ability to write good content because we are encouraged by social media to shorten our thoughts. It does however mean, our students should know how to get straight to the point!

I am really looking forward to working with you again – hope you’re making the most of this amazing weather today in Vancouver!

  2. Hey Jesse!

It’s great to see a familiar face! I’m looking forward to working with you again!

    Sean
