Photography as Communication

Photography not only helps us to learn, but also helps us to feel, to be informed, and to create connections.

by Laura Hall & Sarah Irwin-Gibson

Welcome to our presentation on photography as a means of communication, found at (Photography as Communication). Today we will be looking at photography and the many ways that it facilitates communication as a universal language, a means of advertising, promoting visual literacy and acting as a technology in itself. As images attempt to tell a story, to share, and ultimately, to communicate, photographs have been used to convey meaning and recount histories.

We chose to create a video using many collaborative platforms, such as google docs, powerpoint, iMovie and finally, youtube as means to share our work. We found the creation of the video both challenging and rewarding as we used different mediums of production and with the content. Spending much time focused on our audience, we continuously attempted to make the information relevant and intriguing for the viewer. We did find it tough to answer all of the questions within the confines of the topic, however, through our research we were introduced to many influential artists making meaning from their work. We hope that you enjoy our video and find the images and artists highlighted throughout the film as interesting as we do.

  1. Hi Laura and Sarah,

I think you both did an awesome job! In my group, we also attempted to make the information relevant and intriguing for the viewer… It’s not easy eh? I think you monitored and adjusted the materials in a way that fosters the understanding of materials.

I’m really getting into photography as a hobby and I appreciate your research!

    Cheers,

  3. Thanks for your feedback Matt! This assignment was definitely an interesting one as we were able to research something of interest to us while all along expanding our understanding of using new media in order to create the final product.

  4. Thanks for sharing your production. You obviously put in a lot of research time into this. It is amazing to learn about all the uses of photography. A picture is truly worth a thousand words.

    • Thanks for your comment Corinne! That was exactly the angle we wanted to illustrate! The ability to communicate through images is so powerful and quite genuinely a universal language that individuals of different cultures, educational backgrounds and geographic locations can all engage with.
