Making our mark: the evolution of pen and paper through time

Here is the link for my video, which is about the history of paper making and the development of the pen.

I really enjoyed experimenting with a number of different tools while producing this project. The intro was made using VideoScribe, and with the creation of a character made from the program “Voki”. Most of the project was created using iMovie. I had a number of challenges putting this project together. One problem was that I have an older version of iMovie, which doesn’t seem to be the most stable software, and I had more than a few battles as the program kept crashing during the editing process. Voki does not allow export of the animated product, so I basically just videotaped it during online playback using my phone. Not perfect, but it got the job done! The voiceover was another adventure. I recorded my own voice using an iPhone app called MP3 recorder. This app worked really well and allowed me to record each piece in sections and send individual MP3 section to myself, to import into iTunes, and then access it during iMovie editing.

However, the surprising result of using this app was that when I emailed segments to myself, it changed the tone of my voice, slightly dropping it down in register and slowing it down. So, it doesn’t actually sound quite like me, but did give me an announcer-like quality to the voiceover. It also made my video a little longer in length due to this unintentional slow down! I would have preferred the pacing of the voiceover to be actually as I recorded it, which was much faster!

If you have a few minutes, I hope you take the time to view my video production. I learned a great deal through the process. I would have liked to make some additional changes, but at some point, you have to consider that you can always make improvements – and the process becomes the most important part of the learning!
