The Impact of Printing Press on Literacy

Introduction:

This documentary focuses on the change from manuscript to the printing press and how this development impacted literacy.

Production:

The video was produced using wondershare slideshow builder, as this easily allows exporting of videos to popular media formats and it creates animated transitions between images and videos.

Challenges:

Typically assignments are submitted in a written format, this is my first video presentation for anĀ  assignment. This brought some level of unease, additionally the ten minutes presentation forced me to summarize the information.

Positives:

Producing this documentary gave me more information about the transition of the manuscript to printing press and gave me a different insight in video production.

  1. Great job Josh! I find it interesting that Plato commented that writing would be the ruination of memory as I certainly have a great deal of trouble remembering anything if I don’t write it down! haha! I think though that in today’s society there is so much more information constantly being thrown at us –visually, in printing, orally — that our memories are perhaps reaching capacity! I certainly don’t think that written language has been the detriment that he suggested, but our reliance on written text has certainly taken away some of our ability to remember detail as we know that we can refer to the written text later. This is true of the internet as well, of course. Whereas our parents were probably able to remember atrocious amounts of facts about geography, history, and the like, I think that future generations will not store this information to their long term memories as readily as they know that is easily retrievable on line if the need arises.
