Intro on assignment 2 video ‘Full Marks’

In a past MET course I made a stop-action video and was surprised at how much material was needed to fill the required time allotment. Many of the faculty at our college are using Prezi, so for this project (being 10 minutes in length) I decided this would be a good opportunity to make my first Prezi. Not until I had completed the presentation did I realize that YouTube doesn’t work directly with Prezi. There needs to be an intermediary. This lead to what some would call ‘trial and error’ but I label ‘trail and learn some more’, the maze approach. As much as I have become knowledgeable on the influences of the earliest writing communication technologies, I have learned from downloading an array of software options as vehicles for presentations. Communication between software programs is not friendly. Hieroglyphs are looking better every day.
What I also learned from this experience is that free trial versions leave out the most desirable ‘toys’ of the software. With Prezi, I could add a musical background but this element could not be included when I used Screencast-0-matic to transform my Prezi for YouTube compatibility. I am including the direct Prezi access so you may hear the aboriginal flute selection while perusing my presentation. Writing a script was another first. I was surprised by the amount of detail necessary. Dexterity of multitasking is also a skill I practiced and practiced, though not quite perfected. The coordination of eyes, hands and mouth didn’t always happen.
This project, while not being a group project, may have been less stressful if there was a ‘buddy system’ between classmates; one way video tutorials are missing that personal touch. At times, I felt I could have used another set of eyes more familiar with the process. I’ve discovered I’m a morning person and that at the bewitching stroke of midnight I become technically inept.
On the absolute plus side I got to correspond with an actual living researcher on my choice of topic. How great is that!

PS I’m pretty sure Aesop’s turtle was also named Terry.

  1. Oh Darn! I was checking out how my Prezi looked on YouTube and I see that the image citations are not at the end. Unfortunately, it seems because editing and APA comes at the end of my process, they get sacrificed in order to have a product submitted. I will have to go back to my Prezi again and fix the ending before reposting to YouTube.

    • What an impressive multimedia presentation, Terry. I loved it!
I was impressed by all the links you embedded in the video, and the global perspective you took to early inscriptions. That website with the timeline is really great. I learned the three uses of hieroglyphs and noted North American petroglyphs (the park in BC).
Great quote from Robinson (Decoding Antiquity) on the significance of writing to humanity.
The ‘haunting’ music track added sentiment. Loved it.
I remember using Prezi years ago and it seemed to produce “spinning/zooming” presentations. How did you limit it to zooming only? I think this is a preferable experience.

      • Thank you Jann for the moral support!
I wasn’t sure if I was going off track with this format. Now that I’ve done it once, I have a better idea of where I would make minor changes. I’m finding I’m getting to learn a lot through hands on activities how to make technology work for me. I will admit that the lack of spinning was a result of coincidence. I didn’t want to get dizzy myself while working through the process:)
I’m glad to see it was a learning experience for you, too. I have to say looking back I thoroughly enjoyed this project.
        Thanks again
        Terry
