Penmanship: English Printing and Cursive

Choices/Style

I wanted the documentary to showcase different printing and cursive writing styles, without distracting the viewers. I stuck to a black and white colour theme to keep it simple. I used iMovie to create the documentary, mostly due to availability, but also because I could include images, audio and video clips.

Challenges

One of the challenges I faced is that I just got a new computer and I have not installed all the software that I am accustomed to using on it. I am quite comfortable using the Adobe Suite software, and using Adobe Premiere for creating videos. However, I don’t like new Creative Cloud payment options. I have decided to use the software installed on it already, and to use web tools and open source software for graphics editing and content creation.

From learning the software, sourcing the images and video, to creating content – this whole process took much, much longer than I had planned for.

Successes

I found a number of tutorials online and I completed the Lynda.com iMovie course. I was quite pleased to find some public domain and Creative Commons licensed video clips to use. I used PowerPoint to layout some of the content, them imported the images into iMovie. The audio was created using an online product demo for Acapela (http://www.acapela-group.com/ ).

After reading so much about cursive handwriting, I was inspired to purchase a fountain pen, and practice improving my handwriting. Who knows, maybe one day I will even learn calligraphy!
