Say YES to New Prosperity

Tsilhqot’in is set to declare the site of New Prosperity mine a tribal park at Fish Lake. However, this action is controversial. Taseko Mines Ltd.’s Fish Lake property lies outside the title area recognized by the courts, but the natives have now folded the mine site into the tribal park boundary.

There is no question that the court ruling confirms aboriginal title exists. It’s a constitutional and legal right. And the native people’s view is this is their sovereign territory and people going into the territory and applying for licenses of occupation or permits will have to go through the First Nations government.

As a result, how to build up and develop a win-win partnership becomes the key of the issue. Smaller-scale resource activities such as sustainable logging with portable mills may be suitable to provide employment for natives.Taseko’s gold-copper mine project was approved by the provincial government; however, it is twice rejected by federal panels and the federal government.

Even though Taseko changed its plans to preserve Fish Lake,it maintains the environmental review was badly flawed; saying it incorrectly assessed the project and its ability to prevent seepage from a tailings pond. Its legal challenge is before the Federal Court of Appeal, with a ruling possible before the end of the year.

From my point of view, it makes great sense to declare the tribal park for protection of the natural landscape, wildlife as well as the native culture. And the final decision is not closely related to the harmony and prosperity in the region, but also to maximizing environmental production.

How Google Works: Don’t be modest.

Google is universally acknowledged as the largest search engine in the world, from which users can get relevant results in a second. Although it is not available in mainland China, its success speaks for itself.

Then a question comes to my mind, what makes it stand out and why is it so successful? I think the most important point is its special management practices.

Most important is thinking extremely big—the “moonshot”, as it is called in Silicon Valley. The second insight of the Google method is to “fail fast”, and the third element is the primacy of data over experience, intuition or hierarchy in the making of decisions.

However, The core of Google’s method is the empowering of employees. Bosses at all firms talk of this, but the search giant takes it to heart. It has devised systems to enable good ideas from any quarter to get an airing. Many of Google’s biggest products and features (like Gmail) have emerged from this.

In large part Google grew because it threw out the traditional MBA playbook. However, I don’t think its management practices fit all sorts of businesses. Most bosses achieve and retain their positions by safely maintaining an organization, not changing it. That’s why Google can obtain such unique achievements without lots of followers.

Hong Kong protests may cost retailers HK$2bn says ANZ bank

20141004_cnp501

It is a most unusual sight on Chinese soil, and the most unsettling for leaders in Beijing. The spread of news and images of the protests has been blocked or heavily censored on the mainland, but as the protests carry on, the risk of contagion rises.

However, I don’t want to say anything about the politics, especially in such an accurate situation. Let’s just see it from a business perspective.

The demonstrations have coincided with Mainland China’s Golden week holiday, which usually prompts a huge influx of shoppers from the mainland. But China suspended travel permits for domestic tour groups looking to visit Hong Kong because of the protests. The US, UK, Canada, France, Italy, Germany and Australia have also issued travel warnings to their citizens traveling to Hong Kong, telling them to avoid the protest areas.

Hong Kong retailers located near the protest sites such as Causeway Bay and Mong Kok have had to close stores because of the unrest. Some restaurants and bars are also said to be suffering from slower business and closing early. What’s more, sales of luxury goods, cosmetic products, and consumer durables are definitely hard hit.

I think this protest move will lead to a dip in business. Anyhow, I don’t want it to influence people especially the students’ life too much. Hope to find a solution good for both sides soon.

Alibaba: From the Bottom to the Top

Recently, Ali submitted the application to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, planning to go public in April in the United States, lists the name as “Avatar”.

Going public in the United States is not only an important step in Ali’s international strategy, but also a key step for Ali to explore the American market. Currently, Ali’s influence is still confined to the Chinese living area. In the international market, the awareness, visibility, branding is far smaller than Amazon, eBay and other American companies. Going public in the United States market could make Ali become the world’s best-known Internet brand.

But a decade ago, Alibaba was the China’s Internet Company, which suffered the most criticism, and Jack Ma, who sold Ali everywhere, was a liar in many people’s hearts.

However, not supposed to be optimistic also put Ali into a good situation: Since experts are not optimistic about the industry, Alibaba will disappear very soon – many people would think so. The result was when Alibaba did the platform promotion, far fewer people came in and competed with them, which made Alibaba develop smoothly and quickly.

No matter now or in the future, the greatest record of IPO that Alibaba created will be a great milestone.
