CalEnviroScreen 4.0 OEHHA Geodatabase
County Boundaries California Open Data Portal Shapefile
Highways California Department of Transportation Shapefile

Data was obtained from CalEnviroScreen 4.0 in a geodatabase format in ArcGIS. The dataset contains processed and standardized values created by researchers. The metadata is given in the form of a data dictionary and report, which highlights how the researchers processed the data. CalEnviroScreen 4.0 has a percentile calculated for each field, which is the unit we used in our analysis.

A summary of the data processing and sources is given below, according to the CalEnviroScreen 4.0 report.

Air Pollution Exposure

Methods include spatial interpolation and modelling

Variable Indicator Data Source
Ozone Mean of summer months (May-October) of the daily maximum 8-hour ozone concentration (ppm), averaged over three years (2017 to 2019) Air Monitoring Network, California Air Resources Board (CARB)
PM2.5 Annual mean concentration of PM2.5 (weighted average of measured monitor concentrations and satellite observations, µg/m3), over three years (2015 to 2017) Air Monitoring Network, Satellite Remote Sensing Data; California Air Resources Board (CARB)
Diesel PM Spatial distribution of gridded diesel PM emissions from on-road and non-road sources 2016 (tons/year) EMission FACtors (EMFAC) model2017, the 2016 CEPAMv1.05 Inventory for criteria pollutants, and the California Emissions Inventory Development and Reporting System (CEIDARS) 2012 database, California Air Resources Board (CARB)
Toxic Releases Toxicity-weighted concentrations of modeled chemical releases to air from facility emissions and off-site incineration (averaged over 2017 to 2019 and including releases from Mexican facilities averaged over 2014 to 2016).  Toxics Release Inventory (TRI), US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA)

Risk Screening Environmental Indicators (RSEI), US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA)

Traffic Sum of traffic volumes adjusted by road segment length (vehicle kilometers per hour) divided by total road length (kilometers) within 150 meters of the census tract (traffic volumes estimates for 2017). TomTom Find/Route/Display

Diseases

Methods include age-adjusting, aggregating to census tracts, and standardizing to population

Variable Indicator Data Source
Asthma Spatially modeled, age-adjusted rate of ED visits for asthma per 10,000 (averaged over 2015-2017).  Emergency Department and Patient Discharge Datasets from the State of California, Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD)
Cardiovascular Spatially modeled, age-adjusted rate of emergency department (ED) visits for AMI per 10,000 (averaged over 2015-2017). Emergency Department and Patient Discharge Datasets from the State of California, Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD)
