Biology 140 students have started coming to the desk looking for help with the microform collection. They are looking for information on specific microplankton (?) but I have only found relevant information when searching under the family name “copepod”. Two books of note in the Woodward Reserve collection: The Biology of a Marine Copepod, and Copepod Evolution.

Hello all – this assignment happens every year. The students are required to find information on a specific organism, and searching for that organism in our catalogue, usually come up with references to theses and dissertations (which we have in microform). Not usually useful for first year students. There are tons of sources over at Woodward; this assignment has been going on for years, so they know the sources to point students to. Sally Taylor has also done up a website for the course, which gives them the steps to follow to find info on their organism – http://toby.library.ubc.ca/ereserve/er-courselist-search-online.cfm?deptcode=biol&coursenum=140§ionnum= . They usually need to think about moving up the taxonomic chart to a higher level to find info in our catalogue. But showing the website, plus recommending a trip to Woodward, are good starting points.
