A student tried to print a job from K217 this afternoon but it wouldn’t show up on the print queue. Systems help desk suggested typing in the whole id for the computer, KOELAB-121, but it still didn’t show up. They are looking into the problem now and will get back to us.
UPDATE: the next student did key in the entire station ID and number and the print job worked fine, so it looks like you can’t just put in the number, but need KOELAB – at least for 217. Haven’t had comments from people working on computers labelled HUMANITIES so maybe they can just put in the number?

The new printers have been set up (by Tracy from IT). I have left sample printouts at the ref. desk. New prices are $0.07 for black and white and $0.40 for colour. Almost all of the computers on level two have been restarted and the new grizzly (b&w) printer shows up as the default. Users must manually select the colour printer if that’s what they want so hopefully there won’t be too many expensive mistakes. Several computers that were in use at the time that the IT staff were here have not been re-started so they will not reflect the new printers – however users can still print from them (I checked one that was not re-booted and can’t tell the difference…). All the computers will be restarted over night and should all be set up for the new printers by tomorrow. If, after that, any of the computers do not appear to be displaying the correct printer, try restarting the computer. If that doesn’t work call IT.
Xerox Rep (Anthony Wong) has also done some installation work on the map printer so that should be all ready to go too.

Hi all,
To print to the Reference area printer from a laptop, type “HUMANITIES” for the printer name. Tracey will be putting yellow stickers on the printers with the printer name.’

From the Systems Help Desk:
Effective immediately, patrons will be able to print from their own Windows XP/Vista laptops, via the wireless network, to our public printers. We are also working on including late model MacBooks on board – instructions should be available shortly.
The procedure, in a nutshell, is as follows:
[1] Have the laptop connect either to “UBC VPN” or “UBCSecure” wireless network
[2] Add a printer according to instructions within our “HowTo” webpage, “Printing” section
http://www.library.ubc.ca/home/about/instruct/htprint.html
[3] Print to the newly installed printer
[4] Approach our Print Release Station with a copy card to release the job:
– on the “Workstation ID” prompt, type “GUEST” instead
– choose the appropriate print job according to timestamp or content descriptions
Patrons can keep the installed library printer(s) on their laptops, in doing so they can skip step 2 if they need to re-use the same printer(s) at a later date.
Please note this service is currently offered on a “pilot/trial” basis, therefore we may have to make procedural changes or withdraw the service if we encounter performance or security issues.

A few students have been coming to the desk indicating that their print jobs from web-ct were delayed (by about 10 minutes or more) or not showing up at all at the print station. A good work-around for this problem is to show students how to save files from web-ct to their work station so that they can print from the desktop or from “my documents.” The print jobs showed up immediately when we printed directly from the work station.
When saving the documents from web-ct, it’s important to make sure you are not just saving empty HTML files. Be sure to check the file type as you’re saving to be certain that it is a Word, .pdf, or other file type that will actually display the information or document that the student wants to print.
