Hi,
Here’s the latest roundup of websites in GovInfo.
Shawnna

Hi everyone,
Just wanted to let you know that I’ve set up a wiki to store gov pubs ref questions, with resources found/required to answer the question….or at least begin to answer the question ;-).
It’s publicly viewable at http://govquestionbank.pbwiki.com/. It’s a work in progress and doesn’t have a lot in it yet. If you want to collaborate in the question bank please let me know and I’ll add your email address to the account.
Cheers,
Shawnna

The copy card machine is out of order. There is a problem with the power supply so it will be out of commission for a few days. Please direct patrons to the card machine on floor 3 (beside the south elevator).

A student tried to print a job from K217 this afternoon but it wouldn’t show up on the print queue. Systems help desk suggested typing in the whole id for the computer, KOELAB-121, but it still didn’t show up. They are looking into the problem now and will get back to us.
UPDATE: the next student did key in the entire station ID and number and the print job worked fine, so it looks like you can’t just put in the number, but need KOELAB – at least for 217. Haven’t had comments from people working on computers labelled HUMANITIES so maybe they can just put in the number?

The students from this class have a long list of ref. section dictionaries which they must consult for their project due on February 24th. I’ve already had three questions about this. As you can imagine, these dictionaries are not on the shelves! At present they have congregated on the book truck by the copy room.

The new printers have been set up (by Tracy from IT). I have left sample printouts at the ref. desk. New prices are $0.07 for black and white and $0.40 for colour. Almost all of the computers on level two have been restarted and the new grizzly (b&w) printer shows up as the default. Users must manually select the colour printer if that’s what they want so hopefully there won’t be too many expensive mistakes. Several computers that were in use at the time that the IT staff were here have not been re-started so they will not reflect the new printers – however users can still print from them (I checked one that was not re-booted and can’t tell the difference…). All the computers will be restarted over night and should all be set up for the new printers by tomorrow. If, after that, any of the computers do not appear to be displaying the correct printer, try restarting the computer. If that doesn’t work call IT.
Xerox Rep (Anthony Wong) has also done some installation work on the map printer so that should be all ready to go too.

I recently received a question regarding typing in French and thought I would repost Heman’s message about this issue FYI.

Hi all,
We’ve had a few patrons expressing their disappointment that our WOPAC’s language bar included English, Chinese, Korean & Japanese support but no French settings.
We did not install “French (Canada)” on the language bar because it is a keyboard mapper – unless we purchase French keyboards (eg: from Quebec…), choosing “French (Canada)” on the language bar would result in mismapped keys, ie: wrong characters showing up on screen as you type.
However, the case with Chinese, Japanese and Korean settings are very different – they are actually a host of utilities that facilitate CJK character input, which include handwriting recognition (see attached screenshot), on screen “soft keyboards”, as well as phonics based input methods. Without them CJK input would not be possible, say, for searching CJK materials.
Having said that, their point is taken and we will include “French (Canada)” in the language bar on our future builds. Hopefully it will benefit francophone touch typists that *remembered* the French keyboard layout. In the mean time, people that need access to diacritics, euros, pounds can use the “Character map” utility under [Start] – [Programs] – [Accessories]. This utility will also tell you the keystrokes required to get to these characters directly, for example to get to an “é”, just hold the [ALT] key while typing 0233 on the numeric keypad (works with most applications) (see attached screenshot).
Hope this helps,
Heman.

Hi all,
I had a call this afternoon about RefWorks- the patron would like to have links to the references show up on her bibliography. Some of the databases provide clean, nice links, and others produce incredibly long urls that look awful in a bibliography, sometimes the urls aren’t imported automatically and you have to enter them manually. Any suggestions? She is going to email her question to lib-refworks@interchange.ubc.ca, but she also might call back. Just a head’s up.

Hi all,
Here’s the link to the PDF you have all been waiting for 😉

Hi there,
There seems to be a problem with the Globe and Mail: Canada’s Heritage database. Kat said that there may have been a problem with the renewal process as the Library changed vendors from ELN to CKRN. She has called customer support this afternoon (Friday) and she hopes to hear back by Monday. So unfortunately patrons will not be able to access the database this weekend; however, there is the microfilm version of the paper which they can access.
