Movable Type was upgraded over the holidays, and now supports the use of tags. So feel free to put posts in categories, and try out the tag option as well. More information here.
But… I still can’t figure out how to make the tags display!
On the downside, the upgrade seems to have lost the posted by ‘name’.
Cheers, Ellen

From the UBC Sustainability Office:
You can drop off your batteries in the new Special Items Recycling unit in the SUB. The unit is located at the North basement entrance of the SUB and was launched by Waste Management last month to kick off Waste Reduction Week and in conjunction with the UBC Sustainaibility Fair. Plastic bags, non-rechargeable batteries, rechargeable batteries as well as small e-waste items (e.g. CDs, DVDs, videos, cell phones, computer mouses, etc.) are all being collected there for recycling.

Hi all,
I’m doing an instruction session called “Back to Basics: Library Skills for Returning Students” on Thursday, Nov. 16th from 12-2pm and another on Thursday January 18th 12-2pm in Koerner 217. If you come across anyone who might need or be interested in this class, please direct them to the registration page http://toby.library.ubc.ca/booking/description.cfm?sessionid=3278. Thanks, Tara.

To GAA’s: while you’re working an evening shift, if a patron advises that a “Storage” map is being held for them, here’s what to do:
1. retrieve the map from the Storage Hold area behind the curved grey counter just beyond the Quick Ref. / Microform Ref. stacks. Maps that have been brought in from remote storage are kept here for patrons under a sign which reads ” Staff Area. Maps are not self-serve.”
2. Note that the map or map tube has a beige form attached to it containing the patron’s name, etc. and a description of the map(s). Remove the form and follow the simple instructions on the back (top portion only).
This process refers only to maps which have already been retrieved from storage. Requesting a map from storage is a different function which will be described in the Nov. 2 Map Ref. Review session.

Re the observing students, I will give them a tag to wear saying Observer….D

The library catalogue has finally been changed to show the location for Main Library as I K Barber Learning Centre!

Each August, Beloit College presents a Mindset List of experiences and events that have informed the lives of incoming first-year students.
From the introduction:
“Most 18-year-old students entering the class of 2010 this fall were born in 1988. They grew up with a mouse in one hand and a computer screen as part of their worldview. They learned to surf the internet as they learned to read. While they were still in their cribs, the 20th century started to close as the Berlin Wall came down, the Soviet bloc disintegrated, and frequent traditional wars in Latin America gave way to the uncontrolled terrors of the Middle East.”
Some of my favorites in this year’s list:
– The Soviet Union has never existed and therefore is about as scary as the student union.
– “Google” has always been a verb.
– Text messaging is their email.
– The U.S. has always been studying global warming to confirm its existence.
– Michael Moore has always been showing up uninvited.
