Hi all,
To print to the Reference area printer from a laptop, type “HUMANITIES” for the printer name. Tracey will be putting yellow stickers on the printers with the printer name.’

From the Systems Help Desk:
Effective immediately, patrons will be able to print from their own Windows XP/Vista laptops, via the wireless network, to our public printers. We are also working on including late model MacBooks on board – instructions should be available shortly.
The procedure, in a nutshell, is as follows:
[1] Have the laptop connect either to “UBC VPN” or “UBCSecure” wireless network
[2] Add a printer according to instructions within our “HowTo” webpage, “Printing” section
http://www.library.ubc.ca/home/about/instruct/htprint.html
[3] Print to the newly installed printer
[4] Approach our Print Release Station with a copy card to release the job:
– on the “Workstation ID” prompt, type “GUEST” instead
– choose the appropriate print job according to timestamp or content descriptions
Patrons can keep the installed library printer(s) on their laptops, in doing so they can skip step 2 if they need to re-use the same printer(s) at a later date.
Please note this service is currently offered on a “pilot/trial” basis, therefore we may have to make procedural changes or withdraw the service if we encounter performance or security issues.

Please be advised that one of our two Voyager OPAC servers went down unexpectedly last night.
One OPAC server is still operational and should provide Voyager access – however, there is a chance that some Library users may experience difficulty searching the catalogue or checking ‘My Account’.

I managed to download Google Notebook and I think it is going to prove a very popular tool for students. The widget allows you to:
* Clip and collect information as you surf the web.
* Stay in your browser window.
* Organize your notes from the web page you’re on.
Try it out or have a look at the video if you’re curious.
Happy organized web surfing!

From David Winter:
Hello
CISTI Orders should be working properly now. Please let me know if users continue to have problems accessing the order form.
Due to changes in the CISTI servers, we are now using IP authentication to authenticate our users. This means remote users will need to establish a VPN connection before they can use CISTI Orders. Please continue to ask users to use the CISTI Order page as we are still using ezproxy to block community cardholders from ordering CISTI material.
If you have any questions, please contact me.
Thanks David

Students are reporting that they are unable to log in to the public terminals with their CWL. The library barcode and pin did work for these students. Tracey in systems thinks this problem may be related to the change earlier this month in the CWL that requires that Netinfo/Interchange accounts are correctly synchronized with a CWL account.
What does this mean, you ask? If the student hasn’t synchronized their CWL and interchange accounts, the CWL login won’t work. They can successfully log in with their barcode and pin.

Hi all!
Just so you’re aware, the printer that faces north at print station near the reference desk is having issues! It charged $9.00 from a customer’s print card for jobs that did not print (though they disappeared from the print queue), then printed three articles without incident, and then printed a fourth article with blank pages where some of the printed pages should have been. After the first incident, I printed a page from one of the 2nd floor computers without problem, but evidently the printer is choosing its battles.
Just a note of caution for upcoming desk shifts!
Karine

Hello
CISTI Orders will not be available for the near future. CISTI has moved to a secure server and this is causing problems with our proxy. Tom is working on the problem.
Please ask users to submit their requests using the interlibrary loan forms.
Thanks,
David

Early this week a distraught student came to the Ref desk with files created at home on Word 2007. She needed to print them but the new .docx file format was not recognized by our version of Word. She left before we found a solution but the site at http://www.zamzar.com offers free file conversions, sending the converted file as an attachment to the user’s email address.

A patron phoned from home this afternoon (Sunday) to ask about using MetaLib from home. He was connected via VPN, but wasn’t able to use MetaLib without being prompted for a password. He also said there were lock icons next to the links.
I suggested accessing certain indexes and databases individually, which did work. I suggested some interdisciplinary databases based on his paper topic.
Anyone know of any problems using MetaLib from home?
