Project Statement
Once a Chevron gas station and now a derelict community garden, The Alma Restoration Garden was created in response to urban failures illuminated by Covid-19 and the sociodemographic needs of the Alma and W Broadway community. In Latin and in Spanish, the term alma translates to nourish and soul; the definitions of which were instrumental in my site redesign. It is from these words that I chose to create a space of healing and of nourishment, for the earth and for the soul, that would provide a safe space for respite, introspection, relaxation, and gathering. My design, based on critical elements of restorative, sensorial, and planting design theory, plays on the significant benefits of wildness, greenness, and biodiversity on stress and restoration, and allows the visitor to lose themselves in the beauty and calm of a lush, strolling garden.
