Backyard Park

Backyard Park aims to evoke the feelings associated with a backyard, such as a sense of comfort, safety, belonging, playfulness and familiarity. We aim to foster inclusivity by removing as many barriers as possible, and creating a place that is yours; a place that feels like home.

Project Statement

The Columbia Park of tomorrow will look far different then today. It will no longer be surrounded by single family housing, but rather nestled amongst developments supporting over 85,000 residents. Tall buildings will replace private yards. Residents will require a space that fosters social connectivity, and provides equitable access to green space. This future neighborhood will need a functional park.

Responding to this rapidly increasing density, our concept for Backyard Park is a shared backyard. With a network of adaptable spaces, this design draws on backyard typologies to develop a gradient of program from formal to informal; a lattice for both community and ecology to grow on.
