New Art by syilx artist Csetkwe


Designed by syilx artist csetkwe, the word used in the artwork, ‘stamiyaʔ’ is the nsyilxcen  word that is literally meaning doe-buck, and is one of the names syilx use for specific non-binary/ indigiqueer/ indigitrans/ two spirit/ in between folks. UBC Okanagan Gallery and Indigenous Art Intensive share csetkwe’s artwork to promote inclusivity and Indigenous decolonial practices.The artist emphasizes the syilx specificity of the concept and word, please do not use without permission.
 

csetkwe (she/her/ stamiya) is a multi-gifted artist with her roots in the syilx (Okanagan) and Secwepmec (Shuswap) Nations. Holding the respect of being a sqwuy (mother to sons) stamiya (two spirit) and a traditional knowledge keeper, she mainly works in ceremony, mental health/ wellness, storytelling, performance art, song/ poetry writing, painting, illustration and most recently murals.
