Celebrating childhood mulitlingualism in the city of Biel/Bienne

The city of Biel/Bienne promotes its bilingualism. However, daily life goes beyond two “official” languages to include a wide range of additional “unofficial” languages, forming a dynamic multilingual reality. How do the children of Biel/Bienne perceive the languages of their daily lives and the surrounding multilingual context?
We explore these questions in a public event, co-organised by the Center for the Study of Language and Society (CSLS) of the University of Bern (UNIBE) and the Bilingual Teacher Training Course (BIL) of the Pädagogische Hochschule Bern (PHBern).
The evening will begin with an exhibition of “language maps” created jointly by students of the Filière Bilingue (FiBi) and students of the UNIBE and the PHBern. A public discussion about everyday multilingualism in the city of Biel/Bienne will follow with invited guests from local institutions and civil society organizations.

Une exploration de l’enfance plurilingue en ville de Biel/Bienne
La ville de Biel/Bienne met en avant son bilinguisme. La réalité quotidienne va toutefois bien au-delà de ses deux langues « officielles » et compose avec une large palette de langues « non-officielles » une réalité plurilingue dynamique. Comment les enfants de Biel/Bienne se représentent-ils les langues de leur quotidien et le plurilinguisme environnant?
Nous explorons ces questions à l’occasion d’un évènement public, coorganisé par le Center for the Study of Language and Society (CSLS) de l’Université de Berne (UNIBE) et le cursus de formation bilingue des enseignant.es (BIL) de la Pädagogische Hochschule Bern (PHBern).
La soirée débutera par l’exposition de « cartographies langagières » réalisées conjointement par des élèves de la Filière Bilingue (FiBi) et des étudiant.es de l’UNIBE et de la PHBern. Une discussion publique au sujet des réalités plurilingues en ville de Biel/Bienne conviera des représentantes de la société civile et des institutions locales.

Eine Erkundung mehrsprachiger Kinderwelten in der Stadt Biel/Bienne
Die Stadt Biel/Bienne betont ihre Zweisprachigkeit. Die Alltagsrealität geht jedoch weit über ihre beiden offiziellen Amtssprachen hinaus und bildet mit weiteren, “inoffiziellen” Sprachen eine dynamische mehrsprachige Realität. Wie nehmen Schülerinnen und Schüler diese lebensweltliche Mehrsprachigkeit wahr?
Diesen Fragen stehen im Zentrum einer öffentlichen Veranstaltung, die gemeinsam vom Center for the Study of Language and Society (CSLS) der Universität Bern (UNIBE) und dem Bilingualen Studiengang an der Pädagogischen Hochschule Bern (PHBern) organisiert wird.
Der Abend beginnt mit der Ausstellung von “Sprachkartografien” einer Klasse der Filière Bilingue, in Zusammenarbeit mit Studierenden der Soziolinguistik und des Bilingualen Studiengangs der PHBern. Am öffentlichen Table Ronde diskutieren Vertreterinnen lokaler Institutionen über die alltägliche Mehrsprachigkeit in der Stadt Biel/Bienne.

Un’esplorazione dell’infanzia plurilingue nella città di Biel/Bienne
La città di Biel/Bienne valorizza il suo bilinguismo. Tuttavia, la realtà quotidiana va ben oltre le due lingue “ufficiali” e, insieme a una vasta gamma di lingue “non ufficiali”, forma una realtà multilingue dinamica. Pertanto, come percepiscono le bambine e i bambini di Biel/Bienne le lingue della loro vita di tutti i giorni e il plurilinguismo che li circonda?
Esploriamo queste domande in un evento pubblico, co-organizzato dal Centro per lo Studio della Lingua e della Società (CSLS) dell’Università di Berna (UniBe) e dal Corso di Formazione per Insegnanti Bilingue (BIL) della Pädagogische Hochschule Bern (PHBern).
La serata inizierà con una mostra di “mappe linguistiche” create congiuntamente dagli studenti della Filière Bilingue (FiBi) e dagli studenti dell’UNIBE e della PHBern. Una discussione pubblica sulle realtà multilingue della città di Biel/Bienne inviterà le rappresentanti della società civile e delle istituzioni locali.
