Here’s my splot about digital SPLOTs.
SPLOTs are described, but the originator and creator of these WordPress wonders as the:
-
- Smallest/Simplest *
- Possible/Portable *
- Open/Online *
- Learning/Living *
- Tool/Technology
The vision and intention is about keeping online web publications open, simple, and easily usable by educators and learners. So, just what is a SPLOT and how do you use one? This page about SPLOTs shares some of the origin story about SPLOTs. This comes with the caveat that “there is no reason that the problems that SPLOT tools try to address cannot be addressed in other frameworks. If this approach appeals, we hope others will find better ways to support more accessible, sustainable, and user-friendly ways to get publicly-engaged learning happening on the open web”.
SPLOT is powered by WordPress!

SPLOTs in action
There are varying versions of SPLOTs in action – each comes with variations on a theme in WordPress and it’s own look, feel, and purpose. Here are some of those variations for you to explore.
- TRU Sounder (SPLOT) – for audio recordings and sound files, or links to sound curation locations such as Soundcloud
- SPLOTbox – a site for collections of media content (termed “items”) where contributions can be made without requiring logins or providing personally identifying information. Learn more about SPLOTBox on Alan Levine’s blog site and access the theme materials on GitHub.
- SPLOTPoint – https://splot.ca/splots/splotpoint/
