Blogging about Blogging

This is a post with ideas, resources, questions, and links about blogging as I prepare for a workshop series.

1.What is blogging?

Blogging combines the terms web with log becoming weblog or blog for short. This term is both a noun and a verb – for example, to work on your blog site makes you a blogger.

Historically, blogs started late in the1990s and took off in terms of public access and production with the advent of hosting tools such as LiveJournal and Blogger (later bought by Google).

At its simplest, it is a web journal; at its most complicated it can be a full website.

As stated on Wikipedia, “Blogging combined the personal web page with tools to make linking to other pages easier — specifically permalinksblogrolls and TrackBacks. This, together with weblog search engines enabled bloggers to track the threads that connected them to others with similar interests.”

2. What is WordPress?

WordPress is a web log tool. It is an industry standard for web publication. It is often offered free to people who wish to publish content to the internet without needed to acquire complicated hosting and web management skills. We’ll look at some hosting options in a minute.

3. What brings you to a Blogging with WordPress workshop?

  • What’s your blogging story?
  • Where and why have you blogged before?
  • What are your blogging memories?
  • Who are your blogging friends or models?

Please share your blogging experiences either using an open mic in the workshop, in the chat within the workshop, or on this openly accessible Etherpad word processing space.

New to Learning Design

This is a great space to capture some thoughts about learning design as I begin working with the University of British Columbia as a learning designer. I’ve been doing learning design throughout my career but this is the first time I have this name in my job description. I’ve spent this first week on the job – virtually that is – since we are all still working from home locations due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. This is one of the reasons I even applied for the position, knowing that I could manage this work from within the safety and security of my own space.

Where to begin

I’m now wondering where to begin in this journey toward learning design for online teaching and learning. There are so many options and so many ideas – how do I filter through them to find the ones that fit for me?
