Destination UBC Peer Leader opportunity | apply by Feb 15, 2016

Peer Leaders (formerly known as Chaperones) are an integral part of the Destination UBC program. From May 27-29, 2016, they will welcome hundreds of newly admitted high school students from across Canada to UBC’s Vancouver campus. Peer Leaders will act as role models for participants and all members of the UBC community. They will plan and implement activities for participants, supervise the residence area and event spaces, and support Student Recruitment and Advising (SRA) staff with the event logistics.

We are considering applicants for both the Senior Peer Leader and Peer Leader positions. Outstanding applicants will be extended an offer for the Senior Peer Leader position.

Applicants for the Vancouver positions must be available on March 10th or 11th for interviews (exact times to be determined).

JOB DUTIES:
– Be available from Friday, May 27 at 12:00PM until Sunday, May 29 at 12:00PM; required to stay in residence overnight on Friday and Saturday (will be given accommodations)
– Be present and regularly visible throughout the weekend
– Exemplify leadership and act as a role model for participants
– Assist SRA with promoting and implementing activities and events for Destination UBC participants, including set-up and teardown
– Support and supervise students staying in the residence
– Know and observe both residence and university rules and regulations
– Under the direction of SRA staff, report to their Senior Peer Leader
– Provide reports/updates and communicate violations of university rules and regulations to Senior Peer Leaders
– Work in cooperation with Destination UBC Coordinators, SRA staff, UBC faculty members, and all Peer Leaders
– Set an exemplary standard of conduct when in the presence of Destination UBC participants at all times

In addition to the above, Senior Peer Leaders:
– Report to SRA staff members
– Work in cooperation with SRA staff, UBC faculty members, and all Peer Leaders
– Develop Faculty-specific weekend programming with all stakeholders concerned
– Are responsible for a team of up to five (5) Peer Leaders
– Collect reports and updates from Peer Leaders during designated check-in times; required to liaise with SRA staff member

TRAINING:
Attend and participate in two days of Destination UBC Peer Leader training (Dates TBD)

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:
– Build leadership skills
– Enhance interpersonal communication skills
– Plan/implement activities and events
– Assist prospective students with the transition to university

RENUMERATION:
Senior Peer Leader:
$350 honorarium for the term of appointment (May 27-29, 2016)

Peer Leader:
$250 honorarium for the term of appointment (May 27-29, 2016)

Qualifications

– Be a current undergraduate student at UBC’s Vancouver Campus
– Knowledge of on-campus services and opportunities available to students
– Leadership experience is an asset
– Outgoing and energetic; willing to address individuals and large groups
– Reliable and responsible; act as a role model for all Destination UBC participants
– First Aid training is an asset
– Criminal Record check required (UBC will cover the fee)
