BCFPA Spring Speaker’s Evening – Early Bird Deadline Extended to May 3rd!

Just a friendly reminder that the BCFPA Spring Speaker’s Evening scheduled for Wednesday, May 11, 2016
 at the Firefighters’ Banquet and Conference Centre (6515 Bonsor Ave, Burnaby, BC – at Metrotown area). The Speaker’s Evening will be on updates on supplemented food products in Canada and high risk communication.

The title of the Speaker’s Evening is entitled, “Updates from Health Canada’s Food Directorate & Risk Management from a Social Media Perspective“.

Guest speakers include:

Dr. William Yan (Director of the Bureau of Nutritional Sciences in the Food Directorate, Health Canada) who will be speaking on “Updates from Health Canada’s Food Directorate: Supplemented Food Products in Canada, What You Need To Know”Dr. Yan was appointed as Director of the Bureau of Nutritional Sciences in the Food Directorate. Since then, he has provided leadership in the Bureau’s work on developing nutritional standards and regulations as well as pre-market assessment of novel foods, novel fibres, health claims and infant formulas.  Recently, Dr. Yan led the transition of food-like natural health products to the food regulatory framework. He is currently leading the Food Directorate’s work on improving how nutritional information is provided on food labels in Canada. Dr. Yan will be speaking on the current direction of Health Canada regarding food and nutrition regulation, key priorities of the Bureau of Nutritional Sciences such as amendments to nutrition labelling regulations, revision to fortification policies and management of supplemented foods.

Della Smith (Principal, Q Workshop Inc) who will be speaking on “High Risk Communication Today”. As a consultant, Della has specialized in crisis and issues management, and worked on food related issues including product recalls, food tampering, activism, disease outbreaks, food poisoning and more. She has also worked extensively in the health sector and with regulatory agencies. Today her company, Q Workshop, focuses on helping organizations through workshops and facilitated sessions. Della will be speaking on food related high-risk communications through practical tips, tools and techniques. Della’s interest breakdown will include: food producers, academic, government, consultants and contract labs.
