UBC Young Women for Science

The UBC Young Women for Science is looking for new members! They seek to inspire more young people, especially self-identified females, to pursue careers in STEM by presenting at high schools in Vancouver and the Okanagan. There will be social events during the year and will host a Women and STEM conference here at UBC in the spring.

YWFS meets weekly during Term 1 on Mondays at 11:00am and Fridays at 2pm (you only need to attend one meeting a week), and will have two presentation run-throughs in January and February. Meetings start this week on October 1 and October 5.

Presentations will be primarily over Reading Break (February 18 – March 1 in Vancouver) and after Final Exams (April 23 – May 3 in the Okanagan). Presentations consist of short talks by members about their fields, path to UBC, research, university experience, and future career goals, as well as one or two hands-on activities or demonstrations.

It is a great opportunity to promote women in science, be a role model for the next generation of scientists, gain experience with public speaking and science outreach, and meet some really great and like-minded students from different fields.

Membership costs $5 for UBC students. If you are interested, please contact YWFS President Teagan Phillips at pres.ubcywfs@gmail.com for more information.
