Event October 17th – Volunteers needed for LFS Panel Discussion on Food Related issues in Indian Residential Schools

We are looking for volunteers to assist with a panel discussion  on Friday, October 17th at the UBC Longhouse.

  • The afternoon panel discussion will be from 12:30-2:30pm

The purpose of the event is to educate and stimulate critical reflection on past food-related injustices in IRS and find ways to promote living together in a civilized and respectful society.

Volunteer specifics:

– Three volunteers will need to be available in the morning at ~10:30am for food preparation and stay until ~3:00pm.

– Other volunteers will need to be at the Longhouse by 11:30am and stay until ~3:00pm. Tasks will involve general set-up of the venue (seats, tables), welcoming guests as they arrive, and clean-up of food areas following the reception.

Orchard Garden Weekly Market Stand – starts Tues, Sept 16

Get your fresh veggies on campus on your way to class!

The Orchard Garden is holding a weekly market stand! Come and support the garden by purchasing fresh, organic produce, grown just a couple of blocks from the faculty building! We will be located right in front of Macmillan on Tuesdays from 11-2pm. Next week we will have kale, carrots, beets, onions, tomatoes, salad mix, pumpkins and lots more!

Cash only; bringing your own grocery bags is highly encouraged!

Cerebral Palsy Association of BC – Community Kitchen volunteers needed!

The Cerebral Palsy Association of BC is starting a Community Kitchen and they are looking for a few volunteers to help us launch this program! Volunteers will help with the organization, planning and operation of this Kitchen. This is a great opportunity for students to put their knowledge of food security and community health to use and gain hands on experience working in the community.

The Community Kitchen is going to be at the First Baptist Church between 10am-2pm on the fourth Monday of every month. The first one will be held on September 29th. They are looking for volunteers who are available for 5-8 hours of work per month (Must be available Monday daytime when the kitchen is open). Research Experience Program (REX) – register by September 30!

Interested in research, but don’t know where to start? Become a mentee with URO. URO runs the Research Experience Program (REX) during the UBC school year from September until March, with the aim of encouraging and facilitating undergraduate students into research. We are currently looking for enthusiastic undergraduates who are interested in developing a theoretical research project which they will present as a poster at the Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Conference (MURC).

BC Conservation Symposium – September 11, 2014

The BC Conservation Symposium is an annual event coinciding with the international Artists for Conservation Festival. It brings together conservation professionals to share information and insights, with a special emphasis on synergies between the arts and sciences. The Symposium is an opportunity for the public to hear directly from a range of conservation leaders about pressing conservation issues. It also offers a unique forum to explore how the principles, passion, and practice of art can strengthen the conservation movement.
