Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Conference (MURC) – March 22, 2014

Celebrate exciting and innovative research at UBC!

The Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Conference (MURC) is supported by the UBC Provost Office, the Vice President, Research + International Office, and the various direct-entry Faculties and Schools at both UBC campuses. It is managed by the Vice President, Students Office.

The top presenters from this year’s Conference will be invited to submit papers for possible publication in the conference proceedings. They may also be asked to compete to represent UBC at the U21 Undergraduate Research Conference next July.

Undergraduate researchers will be presenting on their work and keynote speakers will share their exceptional and exciting research experiences with you. There will also be information booths with research and funding opportunities. Come check out what your colleagues are doing, and get connected so you can do it too.

How can you get involved with MURC?

Apply to Present – We are looking for student presenters that are conducting research across all UBC faculties. Your project does not have to be finalized, and can be at any stage of the research process as long as you get the pre-approval of your Supervisor before registering.

Register to Attend – Come out to celebrate all of the exciting and innovating research that is being conducted by your classmates.

Volunteer – We are always looking for a few outstanding people to help make this conference a success. Learn new things, build your skills, share your expertise, and meet new people.

Backpacking with a Purpose – International Service Learning Opportunity, due Feb 12

This summer, Operation Groundswell is sending hundreds of students across the globe for six week programs that will change their perspective on the developing world. You will have a unique opportunity to truly immerse yourself in new customs and cultures with
the help of our incredible program leaders, who have organized meaningful community service projects, meetings with innovative local NGOs, and one crazy adventure.

Acute Relief, Lasting Results: Conflict Aid Paving the Way for International Development

Tuesday, February 4, 4-6pm, Global Lounge (2205 Lower Mall, Building 1)

Friends of Medecines Sans Frontieres (MSF) and UBC Red Cross will present on the struggle to deliver aid in conflict zones as seen through the lenses of MSF and the International Committee of Red Cross. Opening with a discussion of what it means to be truly impartial in a crisis situation, they will look at challenges these and others face on the ground and around the world, and what can be done to facilitate their life-saving work.

Extending the Table: Conversations around Food and Latin America

Wednesday, February 5, 5:30-7:30 pm, Agora Cafe, MacMillan Building – 2357 Main Mall

The Global Lounge and The Faculty of Land & Food Systems invite you to an interactive buffet dinner that will use the table as a metaphor illustrating the many connections between land, food, and community in both a local and global development context.  With a focus on Latin America, we will explore the implications of a global food system on local food (in)security, health systems, and sustainability of livelihoods in both our own city and communities around the world. Dinner by donation (pay what you can, no one turned away). All proceeds will go to the Umbrella Mobile Clinic.

Interrupting Imperialist International Development: A Critical Race Feminist Analysis

Thursday, February 6 (Thursday), 5:30-7:30 pm, Global Lounge (2205 Lower Mall Building 1)

Dr. Benita Bunjun (Institute for Gender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice), Ahrthyh Arumugan (Psychology and Gender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice) and Mail Okugawa (International Relations/Global Studies)  will interrogate imperialist “helping narrative” and “global citizenship” discourses and practices within an intersectional critical race feminist framework.  The panel will be followed by interactive discussions which focus on the West’s and white settler societies’ “desire for development” and reproduction of benevolent citizens.

Conversations with International Humanitarians: Strengthening Communities Around the World

Join us for an opportunity to have lunch with three international development practitioners who decided to use their skills and passions to make a positive social change in communities around the world. An opportunity to ask questions and find out more about you can get started in making a difference. Presenters include:  Saad Karim (IBISWar Child Canada), Susan Bibbings (Lotusland Imports & Dream Big Montessori School) and Hilary King ( Embrace Rwanda)

Scholarship for Food Science students – applications due April 18

The American Association of Candy Technologists (AACT) is offering a $5000 scholarship for an undergraduate student in food science in 2nd year and above. Ideally, candidates should have an interest in confectionary food science.
