2013-14 Tri-Mentoring Applications are open – deadline September 23

Apply now to be a part of the 2013-14 LFS Tri-Mentoring program! 

This program creates networking opportunities through “triads” that consist of a junior student, a senior student and an industry professional, all in the same field of interest. Students can engage with each other and those working in the industry to learn valuable skills while benefiting from the advice from each other. This is not a job-seeking program but one that will provide students with more insight into the workforce, career paths and connect them with others.

August Workshops at the UBC Farm

Summer is still here! Here are some workshops happening at the UBC Farm:

 

Three Sisters in The Kitchen: A Traditional Maya Cooking Class

Join members of the UBC Farm Maya in Exile Garden for an interactive traditional cooking workshop this August. Learn some of the medicinal and culinary uses of various herbs and vegetables grown in their garden. In this workshop, participants will learn how to make the delicious yerva Mora salad; the steamed and sauté amaranth (bledo) with squash blossoms with freshly made tortillas. Try your hand at making fresh tortillas, and enjoy the garden-fresh dishes you prepare!

Deliciously Decorative: A Garlic Braiding Workshop

Join us at the UBC Farm for an evening dedicated to preserving and storing UBC Farm softneck garlic and flower harvests in a decorative way.

You will leave the workshop with a beautiful braid of your own making from organically-grown garlic and flowers organically-grown on the UBC Farm. Approximately 1lb of garlic and decorative flowers are included in workshop price.

Hastings-Sunrise Community Food Network – Survey Volunteers needed by Sept 9

The Hastings-Sunrise Community Network Food Coordinator is looking for 4-5 volunteers ASAP to help develop and implement a food security survey for the community in September. As part of this survey, students are expected to:

– help develop the survey to determine the community’s level of food security, the gaps and how the community feels it can be improved. A draft survey has been compiled (August)

– administer the survey through various strategies including online, at community events, where people buy food and to the food program participants (September) 

– tabulate the results 

– provide data to an illustrator and Storybook author for reporting (October)

Volunteers should have experience developing and administering a survey, must be fluent in Cantonese and/or Mandarin to translate the survey, and have the capacity to create a picture-oriented survey.

The Faculty of Education is offering a new graduate cohort program with a focus on Ecojustice & Sustainability Education. This MA/MEd in Curriculum Studies is offered in Vancouver, beginning January 2014. Application deadline is September 30.

BCFN Young Earth Solutions — Ideas to Change the Food System

Barilla Center for Food & Nutrition Young Earth Solutions competition.  For students and researchers under the age of 30.  Submit your ideas for projects to change the food system to win a cash prize of €1000 and the opportunity to participate in a 2014 research project with BCFN. Ten finalists will present their projects to a panel of food system experts at the 5th International Forum on Food and Nutrition in November in Milan, Italy in November.

The theme of this year’s competition is: Food and Sustainability: How to reduce our environmental impact, guaranteeing health and food accessibility for all.
