Science Literacy Week!

Science Literacy Week (September 17-23, 2018) is an annual celebration of Canadian science, where libraries, universities, museums and other institutions hold events to show the diversity of amazing research happening across the country.

This year, UBC Library is celebrating with a Science Expo, to be held in the main entrance area of Woodward Library on Tuesday, September 18, 2018 from 10 a.m. to noon. Everyone, including students, faculty, families with young learners, and the wider UBC community, is encouraged to drop by the event to visit the booths. There will be several UBC Library partners at the event:
Beaty Biodiversity Museum
Canadian Blood Services
Engineering Physics
Geering Up UBC Engineering & Science for Kids
Open Science Network DIYBio
UBC Biomedical Engineering Student Team (BEST)
UBC iSchool’s chapter of the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T)
At UBC Library’s booth, expect to get hands-on with Arduino coding and electronics kits, interactive demos with AnatomyTV and Birds of North America, and more. We’ll also be talking about our Seed Lending Library, which allows anyone to pick up seeds free of charge, while providing opportunities to learn about gardening, seed saving, and agricultural research at UBC.

The 2019 UBC Farm Practicum in Sustainable Agriculture is now accepting applications!

The UBC Farm Practicum can be taken as either a six-month (April – October), or as a four-month (April – August), experiential-learning program. The program is part-time (approximately 20 hours per week), and is designed for aspiring farmers, urban gardeners, environmental educators, and students with an interest in applying their learning about sustainable agriculture and food systems. The program is often taken as a non-credit Certificate program; however, 6-9 academic credits are available for interested students.

Participants gain a deeper understanding of agricultural management and small-scale farming, and a network of incredible people to support them along the way. The main approach to learning within the program is hands-on practice. Participants carry out seasonal farming activities with leadership provided by UBC Farm staff in the greenhouses, gardens, fields, orchards, and at our farmers’ markets. In addition, the program includes numerous guest speakers, field trips to various farming operations within the province, and access to a plot at the UBC Farm for individual and shared production.

All applications received by September 24th will be considered for Early Admission. All applications for the Regular Deadline pool are due by October 29th.

A Practicum Open House will hosted at the beginning of the fall season before the application deadline. This year, our Open House at the UBC Farm will occur on September 15th, 12 pm – 2 pm. We will provide a forum to ask questions, meet current practicum students, and receive a tour of the site. No registration is needed. If your schedule permits, we encourage you to arrive at 12 noon, so you can experience the entire Open House — but arriving anytime between 12- 2 is acceptable. Please look for our tent and table by the entrance to the Farm.

Soci 495A: An Introduction to the Sociology of Climate Change.

New Course:

Soci 495A: An Introduction to the Sociology of Climate Change.

Pre-requisites: None.
(If you have trouble registering, please contact the instructor for assistance.
The calendar indicates that Soci 100 is required, but this will be waived by the instructor.)
Term 1: September – December 2018
Wednesday: 3:00pm – 5:45pm, Room: Frank Forward Building Room 317
D.B. Tindall

Anthropogenic climate change is arguably the greatest crisis facing humanity in the early part of the 21st Century. There is an overwhelming scientific consensus that the average temperature on the earth’s surface is increasing, and that this increase is primarily a result of human activities. This average increase in worldwide earth surface temperature is leading to global climate change. This change will manifest itself in different ways in different locations. Some places will experience more severe droughts, others will experience more severe flooding. Storms will be more severe. Glaciers are rapidly melting, resulting in rising sea levels, and other consequences. These changes will have devastating effects on human societies, and will also have dramatic negative effects on the “natural world” (including massive extinction of various flora and fauna species – some have termed the “Anthropocene”).
While climate change is often seen as a “natural science issue”, its ultimate causes, consequences, and potential remedies are largely social. Thus, sociology should be considered to be a core discipline in understanding and responding to climate change. This course will introduce students to sociological insights about contemporary climate change. It will do so by considering the global nature of climate change, and its implications. No prior training in sociology is assumed.

Impact Evaluation Analytics: LFS International Field Studies – Indonesia

LFS 302B (6 credits)

This course is designed to introduce students to the principles and applications of development project M&E. The world of international development faces many challenges, one of which is the failure of assistance interventions (aid projects and programs). Students will develop a practical understanding of the logical processes by which projects are designed and implemented, including the need for external evaluation, ex post project delivery in order to assess the efficacy, outcomes, and sustainability of these interventions. Lack of project success, more often than not, is a result of inadequate impact evaluation strategies. Students will learn skills to develop strong monitoring & evaluation plans in order to overcome these deficiencies.
