May 2016 graduation application open – deadline Feb 26, 2016

The application for the May 2016 graduation period is now open. The deadline to apply is February 26, 2016.

How to apply

  1. Log into the SSC.
  2. Go to the Graduation menu and select your degree program.
  3. Click Get/Edit/View Application and submit your application.
  4. Print or save a copy of the confirmation page. You won’t receive an email confirmation of your application to graduate.

Important!

Check your name on the SSC as this is how it will appear on your diploma. If your legal name isn’t up to date, please contact your ESP or visit students.ubc.ca for details on how to change it.

After you apply

Your application status will be updated on the SSC.

Most faculties complete the approval process and enter their decisions into the SSC in April or May. Senate then meets to confer degrees, which shows up on the SSC about a week before the ceremony.

If you have concerns whether you’ve met your degree requirements, please contact your LFS Student Services: students@landfood.ubc.ca or 604-822-2620 or drop in!

Attending your ceremony?

In April you will be emailed with ticketing information to students who are planning to attend their ceremony. Please make sure that your email address and other contact information is up to date.

Reading Week 2016 Projects for LFS students

A three-day Reading Week placement with an elementary school or non-profit allows you to apply your academics in the real world while enhancing your skills and connections to the community. There are many projects available to match your interests, schedule, and career goals. Apply now. Projects of interest to Land and Food Systems students:

· Waverley Elementary School – Plan, develop, and lead various discussions and activities at the school’s Healthy Eating and Diverse Cultures Fair. Inspire community awareness in young students while encouraging healthy lifestyle choices.

· Atira Women’s Resource Society – Help create a vibrant and engaging culture for the Atira community through good food and great conversation. Residents will gather together to share a delicious meal you will have planned, prepared, and presented to them.

· Grandview Elementary School – Following a “healthy living” theme, you will develop and facilitate educational activities and provide a fun and knowledgeable atmosphere for students to learn about food and nutrition.

UBC Tandem Language Exchange Term 2 – Feb 1 – Apr 8, 2016. Registration open until Jan 20

Do you want to improve your Spanish? Your English? Your Arabic? Your Mandarin? Or any other language? The UBC tandem Language Learning Program pairs you with someone at UBC who speaks the language you want to improve and who wants to get better at the language that you speak.

No teaching experience is required – just enthusiasm! Activities and support are provided by a facilitator. The program will run from February 1st-April 8th, 2016. Partners meet every week for a total of 10 weeks. You spend half of each meeting in each language – the one you’re learning and the one you’re teaching. In other words, you help each other! This is a fully student-run program, and it’s free! It’s also great for meeting people across cultures and participating in a lot of fun intercultural activities on campus.

Campus Tour Student Ambassador opportunity – applications due Jan 21, 2016

A unique opportunity to work on campus and represent UBC! Enrolment Services is recruiting for  Student Ambassadors to join their campus tour team in May or September 2016. If you are passionate about UBC, enthusiastic about campus life, and want to go above and beyond to make the university community a welcoming and positive learning environment, please apply by Thursday, January 21.  Students can find the job posting by logging on to UBC Careers Online and searching for “Campus Tour Student Ambassador.”  

The recruitment process includes:

  1. an online application that includes some personal profile questions
  2. group interviews in early February
  3. individual interviews in mid to late February

The Campus Tour Student Ambassadors work as official representatives of the university and lead prospective students and their families on regularly scheduled tours.

MURC Presenter Call Out – register by Jan 31, 2016

re you an undergraduate student that is interested in the world of research? Do you have a project you’re passionate about and want to share? The Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Conference is a great place to start if this sounds like you.

Every year, this conference gives undergraduate students the opportunity to showcase their exciting research projects as well as the chance to listen to keynote speakers share their exceptional research experiences. If you have a Faculty-superviser research project you are currently undergoing and want to share with other researches, MURC is the place to do it.

MURC 2016 will take place from Tuesday, March 29 to Thursday, March 31, 2016. 

The registration deadline for presenters is January 31, 2016.

International Studies on Sustainable Agriculture – Cuba Info Session: Jan 14, 2016. Applications due Jan 21

How can we feed a world of 9 billion people? Some say agricultural intensification (high-input, high-technology, high-investment) is the way to go; others claim that the only strategy is to return to agro-ecological methods. The field course, “International Studies on Sustainable Agriculture in Cuba” explores Cuba’s rapid transition to sustainable agriculture within half a decade. Through experiential learning and network development, you will come to understand the power of this tiny island nation’s message.
