a poem for transgender youths

the fancy paper shredder in the office! • feeling more comfortable with someone new than you expect • a huge glass of vanilla ice cream with fudge and caramel sauce • when you push yourself out of your comfort zone and rock it • successful baking experiments • the baby who visited our office! • going to bed early • the Wesbrook Mall shuttle bus from Marine Drive to Save On • awesome coworkers • my culinary skills which occasionally surprise me • people who go out of their way to see you smile 🙂

sunshine this morning and dancing tonight — what a perfect combination!

Arts Career Expo 2012

Arts students! Have you picked up your ticket for the Arts Career Expo yet? Today’s the last day you can buy a ticket for $5; tickets will be $10 at the door tomorrow.

Probably the largest careers event of the year for Arts students, ACE is a great opportunity to hear from alumni in several different fields. The night is loosely structured around two panel sessions of your choice, with a mix-and-mingle networking event afterwards.

The panel I’m most interested in this year is the one on health care and how alumni have got into that field without an MD or even a general Science degree. There are plenty of others, such as marketing/promotions, business, and creative fields, as well as traditionally popular ones like the government, the non-profit sector, and law. ACE is definitely one of those events that is beneficial to attend more than once, to increase your perspective and understanding of different fields you might be interested in.

Or, in my case, I once attended a law panel that confirmed my complete and utter lack of interest in practising law. (With all due respect to the Marshall Eriksens out there.)

Now if they only had a panel for food-lovers, I think I’d be set for the evening!

Work Term Learning Objectives

Calling all Arts Co-op students currently on work terms: Have you submitted your Work Term Learning Objectives yet? They are due in Symplicity today.

For new co-op students who’ve no idea what I’m talking about, these Learning Objectives are the first out of five assignments that co-op students complete while on a work term. This particular assignment is designed to make you take a good look at your job requirements and responsibilities, and to think about what you are hoping to get out of your work term.

You’re also expected to share a copy of your objectives with your supervisor. Not only does it make sure you understand each other’s expectations of your role and responsibilities, it also gives your employer a chance to refer you when projects in line with your goals crop up, e.g. I told my supervisor I want to learn to use SPSS (doable) and Photoshop (not as sure it’s doable within my responsibilities, but if a project does come up, they’ll know who wants it!).

Coming up with learning objectives is made easier by the fact that there’s a form full of questions for you to just answer. I also find it helpful to think about your overarching goal for the term. For example, my first term was also my first full-time position in this country and my first experience in an office environment. Back then, all I wanted was to find out if I could make it in Canada because, you know, Canada has a reputation for being cut-throat and ruthless. This term, it’s all about pushing myself out of my comfort zone more often than I’d like — because boy, do I need to embrace change!

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

That is the sound of my excitement as I pull out a batch of glorious cupcakes smelling deliciously of strawberries. They taste fine, too, if my burnt tongue is anything to go by. As for moisture, the toothpick test proved they are downright perfect.

I’m going to kick myself if I mess up the frosting tomorrow morning, because these cupcakes deserve nothing but the best.

It’s my coworker’s birthday tomorrow, and she said her favourite fruit is strawberries. Since I don’t have a cake pan in residence (the lack of which I really ought to amend), it had to be strawberry and cinnamon cupcakes. This recipe is the second one I’m trying from Desserts for Breakfast, one of my favourite blogs for looking at food and wishing I were best friends with the author. Fingers crossed that my cupcakes will turn out okay, because I sure have no idea how to properly frost anything and have no equipment to help me. No pictures because this is one of those cases where it’s best not to ruin your dreams with a reality check.

Here endeth my entirely frivolous post. Yay!
